Archbishop Of Canterbury: Sharia Controversy

An embattled Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams will confront anger within the Church of England as, on this most critical day of his five years in office, he tries to justify his remarks about Islamic law (and same-sex relationship). A comment that follows this report deserves a mention: “I suspect most comments are from people who have not read Rowan Williams actual speech, which was at the request of a body of top lawyers and academics on a very important issue with regard to social cohesion in our complex, diverse, British societly.

“Surely far more worrying than his contribution to this debate is the strident head-line/sound-bite reaction. The BBC religious affairs correspondent said that the Archbishop did not understand the power of the media. This is the problem. The media and its methods of winning viewers, listeners and readers is in danger of trying to control the functioning of our society where most issues need calm, reasonable and informed discussion and not the crude shouting we have witnessed.”

And here are some more comments…

“Dr Williams sparked a major row after saying, in a BBC Radio 4 interview last week, that the adoption of parts of the Sharia law was ‘unavoidable’ in Britain,” reports the BBC.

I continue to be amused by how religion makes the world more complex and less humane with continual fighting about whose god and beliefs are true.

If there was intelligent design then this inclination to fight over the existence and meaning of god seems like a design flaw.

The Archbishop already was known for being a notorious lefty nut case and outdid himself this time.

The AB was only saying that Sharia law principles could be used by arbitrators in civil issues with judicial oversite. The UK has used Beth Din for over 100 years, to ignore Muslim clerics in arbitration is bigoted. The protests in Ontario over a similar situation resulted in a completely secular arbitration/court, even Beth Din was tossed out with Sharia law interpretation.
