A Personal Apology to CPAC & Ann Coulter

01arsenic_teddy.jpg

I have to admit that I’ve been wrong about the Conservative Political Action Committee inviting crazy people like Ann Coulter to their parties.

For far too long, society has marginalized the mentally deranged among us and with few exceptions like Theodore Brewster (photo) in Arsenic and Old Lace, who thought he was Teddy Roosevelt, we have literally kept these people locked away for generations.

So it was sort of refreshing when CPAC reneged on its disinvitation to Coulter, who far and away has been the most popular CPAC speaker (sorry, Mr. President) after appearances at previous annual meetings in which she hogged the spotlight with outrageous and sometimes obscene outbursts, thereby deflecting attention from the conservatives’ more serious name calling.

And so there was Annie Got Her Guns on the CPAC podium yesterday soaking up the love and cracking gay Democrat and “B. Hussein Obama” jokes following President Bush’s beyond droll stand-up comedy routine in which he warned that “Prosperity and peace are in the balance,” as well as all of the other advances made on his watch, if Hillary Clinton or Obama were to be elected.

Now I understand why the most popular booth at CPAC was where they were giving away free Librium samples.

I agree with a recent comment that the Democrats could easily win simply by replaying the extreme comments of Ann Coulter and Mitt Romney.

    Giving away free lithium?

    If only!!

I thought they told Coulter to stay home this year.

They wouldn't let her get up in front of the grownups this year… They turned her lose on their kids.

Kinda like not letting someone give the sermon but having them teach Sunday School.

  5. DLS says:

Coulter is simply someone marketing herself by being intentionally provocative (with words more than by her appearance).

Romney was never accepted by many as any real kind of conservative, and obviously never was “extremist” [sic; a highly immoderate, in fact truly extreme, as well as incorrect description] in any way.

Whatever Coulter's motivation- or that of Mitt Romney, public figures need to be held responsible for their statements. That she was reinvited to CPAC after her previous performances speaks volumes. She is poisoning a new generation of conservatives, with whom she is wildly popular.

I saw her on C-Span. I don't get her appeal. I mean, Rush can be funny, and Bill O you just sort of sense is dickwaving, and doesn't believe all his BS, but she truly seemes deranged, and I swear, anorexic in the extreme. I flipped channels between these anorexic twins in Australia on Access Hollywwood or something mand Coulter, and Coulter's face was even more skeletal.

    Scary.

  8. DLS says:

I've looked at Town Hall lately to check reader remarks there about the candidates and the election this year (it's a good representative sample of those truly on the right and an occasional lefty expressing contempt for same) and Coulter has far from 100% support there. Same is so for other righty (talk radio) celebs.

One of the commenters to one blog entry is tired of Coulter and also doesn't have respect for her statement about voting for Clinton over McCain (and warns about Clinton as well as writes off Coulter):

    A Writer Named Ann

There once was a writer named Ann,
Who made millions off this great land.
She wrote about libs, exposing their fibs,
We believed her and gave her a hand.
She now says she supports Hillary C.
    Who is an avowed Socialisti.
I think, Ann, you should quickly go
    And read the Commie Manifesto.
There you will find the Hillary kind
Of ideals she will impose and I mean presto!
You say you are a Christian which means Christ-like,
But your ego and greed just don't fit right.
Just face it. We've been had,
    But don't feel too bad.
Start having some fun by giving her the shun.
Start burning her books and list her among crooks,
Who made you believe but all the while
Had her eyes on your wallets and checkbooks.

Well, at least we don't have to worry about a sudden outbreak of sanity over at Town Hall any time soon.

  10. DLS says:

Not by your distorted mis-definitions, certainly.

  11. kritt11 says:

Cosmo- Ann has shock value. She says all the things your mother told you never to mention in polite company. And claims to be a Christian, while saying them, no less!

People just wait to see what outrageous garbage will come out of her mouth next. She's like part of the freak show at the old Barnum and Bailey circus except she's much richer than the fat lady or the dwarfs were!

  12. Jim_Satterfield says:

No, I don't consider this very well balanced mentally.

Exactly where has Hillary avowed herself to be a socialist? You'll find Hillary's ideals in the Communist Manifesto? She will somehow impose those ideas in spite of the limitations of the Presidency? No, it's a whacko screed within a criticism of Coulter and the fact that you can't see that says a lot.
