If you ask me about this I agree as soon as he don't show up in public with it because otherwise it might be embarrassing. I tried to buy one exactly the same but unfortunately I couldn't find.

The toxic environment of bashing, brutalizing and belittling Hillary and her family by this network is a top down directive. They are shameful and unprofessional. It is not journalism, it is tabloid. It is very clear that they are biased – for Obama and against Hillary. In terms of bias they are as bad if not worse than FOX. If it's a non-issue he should not have said it. That is illogical, if it's a non-issue, why NOT say it? That Hill has pounced on it makes her look desperate and out of touch with young'ns; which may be why Obama rocks their world.

There's never been anything to indicate that all she's got going for her are her family's connections. She seems intelligent and remarkably level-headed, which means they have done a good job not turning her into a spoiled brat. And if she had riden her parents' coattails it would be nothing unique, as it is all too common in political life to see spouses, children and siblings working for lobbying firms that do business with the government.

This is a total non-issue. Maybe in your 50s you think 'pimpin'' is pejorative, but this is young slang, and bein' pimped is exactly what is going on. Bill is pimped, MIchelle O is pimped, Big Mac's 98 year old mom was pimped. So?

Another example of real issues being denied in favor of silliness. And the silliness extends to this blog.

This is no different than what happened to Imus or to Chris Matthews who was forced to apologize when he said that Sen Clinton only won her seat because her husband had messed around.

In general, MSNBC's coverage of McCain and Obama has been adoring, while they have been hypercritical of the Clintons.

The whole overreaction to this statement (far worse, more ridiculous than to Limbaugh's cheap shot at Chealsea many years ago) makes not the Clintons but the other whiners the real (and really pathetic) story here.

But regarding Chelsea he reported nothing. Just ventured an unsupportable opinion in distasteful language. Does he consider all candidates kids who work for their parents “pimped out”? His complaint was that Chelsea wouldn't sit for an interview. And he expressed it in the language of prostitution. This is a hard edge we can live without. (BTW… I wonder how Shuster would characterize his six-year tenure with Fox News (1996-2002)? Was he in some weird way pimping himself out?

There's far worse in the media. I don't like what he said (nor do I care for any of those shows) so I don't watch them. I wouldn't expect anything more from them…

I agree with Joe that the question was dumb, but I think what was really bothering Shuster was that Chelsea had been fiercely protected for years from the media (which I think is great and an excellent decision by Bill and Hillary) but now that Chelsea was actively campaigning she should be available for more scrutiny, but she is still being protected. if Chelsea is going to take a high profile role (by campaigning to get younger voters) and powerful position in the campaign (I think calling super delegates is pretty powerful- you just don't let anyone call the movers and shakers on your behalf) then I think she should be open to more media scrutiny. I think it's fine that Chelsea campaigns for her mother.

As Joe mentioned, Hillary is now the victim- that' s how Hillary is spinning it and the perpetrator is a man, picking on her child. Of course Hillary is going to use that moment to her benefit and think of all the free coverage she gets that she doesn't have to pay for.

Bottom line for me: yeah, the comment was unseemly but Hillary has blown it out of proportion and deftly used it for her benefit. Because Chelsea is now actively campaigning for her mother in the way that she is (calling super delegates / campaigning for younger voters) then she should be available to the media. Chelsea is an intelligent young woman who is still being overly protected by her mother.

And 'HappySurge' connotes my name and being happy… Also, Shuster's exemplary reporting can be attested to by anyone that's legit watched MSNBC over the past year or so. Clinton, by the way, is backing out of an NBC debate now, although she did agree to have a Fox News debate, because Fox is filled with people who have assaulted her and her family never, right? They've always treated the Clintons fairly at Fox…. Come on, let's not lie about what's happening here. This is a lie. It's a fake outrage. It's a one in a million comment that gets tossed out daily on all networks. It's nothing more than a political ploy.

All politics is pandering on one level or another. How does one even differentiate your rationale of pandering in one case versus another? But I respectfully disagree with your reasoning and thoughts on this.

Shuster was wrong to say what he said, no one did anything to deserve it – to justify picking on the dau. for actions people don't like about the campaign is terrible precedent. This thread is not about a campaign staff person now equivocating over the debate. It's about Shuster. They should stay separate and judged separately.

To question what is deserving of making a parent “truly upset” is so subjective and judgmental. Again, I'm really kind of surprised.

This stupid comment by Shuster is now taking on a life of it's own, and the Clinton camp is milking it for political capital.

I found this UK article interesting, even at Stanford the Clinton machine controlled the press:
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/america

Even as an adult, Chelsea still enjoyed special protection. When she enrolled in Stanford University – to where she switched after two years from medicine to history – a student journalist who dared write an article about her found herself dismissed from the campus newspaper. The media was thereafter kept at bay even when she graduated with honours and spent a year as a Rhodes Scholar (following Bill's footsteps) studying international relations at the University of Oxford.

Did Howard Wolfson call GE's CEO in a private to protest, no we get a media circus over a stupid comment. I wonder what McCain said about the first daughter…

What he said lacked all semblance of integrity – it has nothing to do with the points you're making.

This is very unfair unless you are going to apply that standard to absolutely every single child of a candidate out there: “She is just playing a silent cheerleader role by being on stage at various events. Her presence is just as pandering as “snowflake babies” used during the stem cell issue.”

And I think that that is a very, very unnecessary and unhelpful thing to do. We're all smart enough to figure out whether a candidate's kid is a positive or a negative. We don't need people making comments like David Shuster's in order to help us figure that out.

Really – I'm surprised you're unable to untangle this.

What did McCain's mother add to the debate? Or the Mitter's 5 sons (except their dad's offensive comment about their contribution to the war effort thru working on his campaign, lol) I agree with Joe. Most family members help out during campaigns, especially in political families. Shuster's comment went over the line- and he was rightly called on it.
