The truth is, in the case of Huckabee, that there is not merely a conservative (or fairly conservative) alternative to McCain, but centrally that the Religious Right, which has been given back-of-the-bus treatment by the GOP (the only of the two busses the R.R. can board; the other bus's driver wants to run them over while its passengers cheer), actually has one of their own they can vote for, who is more mainstream (despite leftist lies) than Pat Robertson or Dobson, et cetera, someone who has held high office (the position of governor, one of the standard springboards to the Presidency along with Senate seats and the Vice Presidency) and has worked with Democrats as well as with other Republicans.

Huckabee is widely suspected of being made McCain's Vice Presidential selection, though McCain may have others in mind and is not ready to surprise anyone (including Huckabee) yet.
