MJDaniels53,

Under single payer, there will be less chance of finding new treatments for cancer. CMS or its equivalent will set the reimbursement for her diagnosis code and the reimbursement rate will be set for the standard of care treatment. Since the Democrats want to take the profit out of drug research and away from the drug companies, there may be no reason for drug companies to expend resources supporting multi-clinic trials for new cancer therapy drugs.

One of the biggest risks of single payer is locking in todays cures and discouraging new cures. There is also the risk that the government can reduce the reimbursement rate so low that it is below the costs of the drug. That will basically mean that CMS can remove any drug from the marketplace at any time.

Single payer means that CMS will be the one deciding the treatments for all except the very rich who can either pay out of pocket or leave the country for their health care.

Yet, I have not heard Senator Obama talk about how he plans to give free healthcare to everyone while encouraging more new developments. I doubt that an Ivy league trained lawyer really cares about developing new drugs but cares a lot about telling doctors what they can and cannot do.

As always, another one of your posts that leaves me speechless!!. Well, maybe I can think of something on this. As someone who works in health care, and sees the direct effect government has on health care, I'm so glad Sarah has gotten superb care at Nationwide Children's. Many people in SE Ohio are not as fortunate due to lack of physician staffing in the rural setting & lack of resources to pay for follow-up care. It's sad, unfortunate and quite simply disgusting at times.

Thanks for the link to the Banner project. I did not know there was a slide show completed. I even found Jess in one of the pics.

Jim:
Which is why I wrote at the end of my piece, "It matters who serves in the White House and the local court house, of course. But only insofar as the ones we elect make it possible for all of us to live our lives in peace.

"Everything else is fluff."

Government has a role in helping people like Sarah live their lives in peace by being a catalyst for the search for cures for horrible illnesses.

Mark

It's always good to hear of people who seem to be recovering from terrible illnesses like leukemia. One of the biggest reasons politics in this age rises above the level of fluff is because of how it affects people with health problems like Sarah if they should be so unfortunate as to not have health insurance and families even less fortunate. I think government is important in these things because for whatever reason so far as I can tell private charities just don't have the resources to help all those who need it.
