I wonder how Ernie would have fared as an embedded journalist? I think there ought to be a memorial for all journalists in the Iraq fiasco, where most were killed with a degree of intentionality. But of coarse that was another time, a different war, the "good war" they called it, and we were all a tad more naive then. What about Dhar Jamail's heroic work today?

Update: My research so far seems to indicate that the memorial death photo was given to a museum, and copies given to other museums. But, perhaps they are waiting to release it en masse. As you say Mike_P, that one will be poignant too when it surfaces. Let's see when it occurs; we'll check back. And OutOfContext, yes, he was an editor and dying from not being able to write, so a paper sent him out to 'cover America." I think that's what you read, and like you said, it is like honey, sweet and rich

Thank you for reading this piece about this extraordinary man 'from another time, another place...'

dr.e

Thank you - nicely written, wonderful subject. I'm sure that photo, once published, will be poignant. But the photo you chose is the way I hope he's remembered.

A subject worth telling and well-told. I've only read his "travel dispatches" in "Ernie's America", which are great and express such a warm engagement with the people of his country and his desire to tell their stories sympathetically, yet not without discernment and humor.
