Sorry Idiosyncrat, but a National Primary day is a terrible idea. Without the lengthy and debate-filled vetting process of an extended primary season, we would have likely had a Presidential contest of Rudy vs Hillary. These two were the clear national front-runners just a month ago. More to the point, without small contests where a limited amount of money can still get you time with voters, the likes of McCain, Romney and Huckabee would have been dead-in-the-water (no one, remember, had really heard of Huckabee before his grass-roots surge in Iowa). Along similar lines, Obama would have been a blip on the national radar, as would Edwards.

For whatever it's worth, Super Tuesday is setting up to be like a national primary day, particularly with the Republican winner-take-all delegate set up. Personally, I'd like to see this get strung out further and continue the dialogue. Clinton and Obama are going to have to square off in front of the electorate simply to gain their party's nomination--I'd much rather that than a single day of voting for who's most popular at the moment.

Like everything else associated with the political cycle, polling has become overexposed, overused and overrated. You'd have to be living on an Aleutian Island to escape the calls and the junk mail. I wouldn't be surprised if even grandmother is getting tired of answering the phone........to the point you start lying just to f**k with them.

More and more I'm really liking the idea of a "national primary". Forget the idiocy of speculating what voting patterns in Iowa and New Hampshire portend for other states... Just do it all on one day and let the best candidate win. Anyone see how such an arrangement would be a bad idea?

McCain's Support Soars, Democratic Race Tightens
Obama Gains Among Whites, Moderates and Middle-Income Democrats

Barack Obama and John McCain have made significant gains in support as the field of candidates has narrowed in both parties. John McCain now leads 42%-22% over Mitt Romney among Republican voters nationally. Support for McCain is up 13 points since mid-January, and he currently draws about twice as much support as either Romney or Mike Huckabee.

Among Democrats, Hillary Clinton's nationwide lead over Barack Obama has been cut in half since mid-January – from 15 points then to eight points currently. Clinton's support is unchanged since then at 46%; currently, 38% favor Obama, up from 31% three weeks ago. This suggests that the Illinois Democrat may have garnered a significant share of John Edwards' support. However, it is important to note that the number of undecided Democratic voters has increased as well in recent weeks. ...

http://people-press.org/reports/display.php3?Re...

Most amazing race I've seen in over fifty years of political wonkhood. The problem for Republicans is the curse of answered prayers, as their chief hate-object Hillary might succumb to a young JFK clone who in turn would defeat McCain, even though J-Mac would beat Hillary handily, IMHO.

It gets even more complex if Mitt wins California & illegal immigration----the Repub conservative obsession---gets into the campaign front and center. Real polls, not the fakery put out by networks & news outlets, have around 80% of Americans dead-set against amnesty or any of McCain's compromises. Romney is so inept, he hasn't figured out that immigration might be his way onto the ticket.

Big-Dem media outlets like CNN & MSNBC have been plumping for McCain non-stop, and FOX is also in the McCain camp. Repubs are generally winner-take-all & Dems proportional, so Tsunami Tuesday may not solve anything on either side.

Wish I were young enuf to get back in the fray, as I did three National Staff campaigns back in the day.
