The Clinton-Obama Conundrum

Two weeks ago, I proclaimed “clarity at last” when announcing my favorites for the primaries, Obama and McCain, and the likelihood that I’d vote for the latter in the general election. While I remain strongly in favor of these two candidates for the primaries, I’m now less sure about the general. I’d like to see more from both men, and hopefully, I’ll be able to, although there’s no guarantee either will win their party’s nom.

McCain’s path to the GOP nom is not as inevitable as it seemed a couple days ago. But he’s clearly in better shape than Obama, whose momentum appears to be stalling.

That’s a shame. Perhaps more of this type of effort will shift things in Obama’s favor in the remaining days before Super Tuesday. Or maybe some more of this — although I honestly and increasingly fear nothing will be enough, that the powerful allure of a vote for pragmatism (i.e., Clinton) may be too powerful to overcome.

I was in the office of a prominent U.S. Democratic Senator on Wednesday. A legislative assistant in that office — someone with whom I communicate frequently and whose opinions I respect — said he thinks, no matter whom the next President is, he/she is going to have his/her hands full figuring out how to adjust the expectations of the American public, a population that increasingly wants more from government but doesn’t want to pay for it. While I found that statement odd coming from a Democratic staffer, he has a point, and he also seemed to suggest Hillary would be better suited for the task than Obama, whose “Yes We Can” motif may be raising expectations so high as to make them unmanageable.

Similarly, one of my bosses, a long-time Democrat and first-year Baby Boomer, seems to speak for many of the early half of his generation in favoring the grounded pragmatism of Sen. Clinton over the uplifting rhetoric of Obama.

And yet, I can’t help translating both of their critiques as “establishment thinking,” as selling short the utility, the power, and the person of Obama. And that’s precisely why I’m thinking about crossing party lines in Missouri’s open primary on Tuesday and casting my vote for the Senator from Illinois.

I think it's safe to say that Colonel Ray's charges are well steeped in hyperbole - at the very least. Anyway, we can get a pretty good idea from this of what kind of BS is going to be slung around during general election campaigning. It's going to be an ugly business I'm afraid.

"...a population that increasingly wants more from government but doesn’t want to pay for it."

I reckon most folks would be happy to just get a government that does what it says it will do, stands for what it claims to stand for, doesn't lie to them, doesn't waste national blood and treasure, and doesn't forget them after the day of the election. Maybe that's asking too much eh?
  • I dunno, Pete. I have reservations about Obama, also... but when is that not true in a presidential election? What I think I hear in your post, Pete, is fear of the unknown. But the more detail I've heard (particularly re: economics), the better I've felt. And I can't stomach the polarization we're guaranteed to see from a Hillary presidency. I'm just so sick of it.

Meanwhile -- I suspect JSpencer is correct that we'll hear more from Colonel Ray and his ilk. The upside to that, of course, is that they'll expose themselves for the rest of us to gaze upon... with no small amount of pity. Living with such ignorance must be very difficult.
  • Jim_Satterfield
But what the Colonel Rays of the world spew out appeal only to the hardcore Republican base, a segment of our country that increasingly repels the independent and moderate segment of the American populace and just isn't enough to win a national election.
  • PaulSilver
I would feel comfortable with McCain, but would prefer the agenda and inclusiveness of Obama or Clinton. I sense all these folks have evolved to be inclined towards collaboration and principled compromise.
To me, it is as important to replace the more ideological extreme Senators with Centrists. Otherwise we may be seeing continued gridlock.
  • See, this comfort people express with McCain - it baffles me. I have never felt it.
  • shika_one
The Democrat's race is too close (big mo be damned). I'm a volunteer for the Obama Campaign here in Georgia. We are excited that it's close. And like Senator Obama said, this isn't going to be easy. The Clinton Machine is powerful and influential.

I'll tell you one thing, there will be a whole gaggle of disappointed Dems if Senator Clinton gets the nod and doesn't choose Senator Obama as her running mate (AND YOU BETTER ACCEPT BARACK!!!!!). I know I will. I really really really will be disappointed. Senator Obama made me want to vote. Made me volunteer. He's so damn inspirational. Really makes me believe what former president JFK said:

And so, my fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.

I really believe that because of Senator Obama. Let me stop now before I start gushing.
  • ColonelRay,

Think about this, you are basically accusing a standing U.S. Senator has indirect ties to a dead dictator by way of his middle name. You are also saying the American electorate that has already voted have been duped by this "murderous dictator by way of middle name" name Barack Hussien Obama. Hmm... Well I better tell my sister who married a man who's last name is Hussien to watch out. He may use chemical weapons on her while she sleeps. In fact, we better watch ALL Hussiens because they are "murderous dictators by way of their middle names". That's just asinine. And then you add the "women tingle all over" angle. Sheesh! Just heaping the curds on thick today.

ColonelRay, we don't make a habit here of removing comments here at TMV. We appreciate sharp criticisms and rebukes. But you sound like the spoiled brat of the schoolyard saying anything and everything for attention.
  • I'll play along a little ColonelRay by asking you this: is Senator Barack Hussien Obama a threat to the security of this great nation? Because you're implying much and the only conclusion to draw is that he's a threat. And he should be ran out of the Senate and questioned like the rest of Saddam Hussien's crew. It's the only course of action sir. And while your chewing on that, I'll be asleep. Cause this play along is boring... zzzz....
  • I'm trying to think whether I've ever heard Hillary's middle name. Or Mitt Romney's. Or John Edwards'... or John McCain's.... or....... or......

They must all be trying to hide something.
  • JSpencer
I don't know where you've been getting your information CR, but I suggest you go to the Chicago Tribune for some solid background on Tony Rezko (not Rezcko) since they've been researching and reporting on him longer than anyone else I've heard of. Yup, he's in jail and I'm sure we'll be finding out more about him as time goes on, but from what I've seen he has ties to lots of politicians and from both sides of the aisle too - including fundraising for our own current occupant of the Whitehouse. With that in mind, I would imagine that any ties to terrorist organizations would have been revealed before now. I've yet to read of any, but then I don't go out of my way to obtain news from the whackosphere either. And who cares what anyone's middle name is. Good grief...

We've done posts about this Muslim "issue." I'm Jewish. Obama is not a Muslim but I would have no problem voting for a Muslim at all if he/;she ran for President and was like the typical Muslims I met when I spent time in Bangladesh and when I lived over in Europe. It would be soooooooo nice in American politics if we could simply debate candidates and their stands on specific issues. But it always seems to boil down to trying to scrounge up whatever someone can do DISCREDIT someone with whom they disagree. You see the same bilge also happening at times with blogs who don't like other blogs or bloggers. American politics has never really been pristine, but with the advent and popularization of talk radio and cable screamfest shows the inclination more than ever has been to try and go after a candidate and destroy them personally. The whole thrust is "you've got to stop so and so from getting into office!" rather than "you've got to help us get this great candidate in office." At risk of upsetting a LOT of TMV readers, as the campaign unfolds I will have my favorites (as we all do) but I don't feel Hillary Clinton, Obama, McCain or Romney would be a threat to our nation in the White House. Now, Britney Spears? THAT would be a threat...and she certainly has practice giving a song and dance, an essential for political candidates these days..
  • Mike_P
It's so sad to read how "first year" boomers are inclined to vote for the "pragmatic" choice. I, as a "last year boomer" (at least that's what the movie theater tells me, I get the cheap tickets now!!!) born in '57, watched as a very young kid as both Kennedys and MLK were assassinated. I saw the firehoses and church bombings in Alabama and Missisppi. I witnessed the carpet bombing of Viet Nam, even as my father served there... Kent State, Woodstock, all the cliche's. And to hear members of the generation that went through all that say we should support the "pragmatic" candidate... Well, it's just an incredibly sad thing to hear.

Don't get me wrong, I respect Hillary and I'll certainly vote for her if that day comes, but my God - what the hell so damaged that generation in the ensuing 35 years that they could no longer see what Obama represents to so many - and so blind to what they have become.

This Man Wants to President of the United States of America........

Speaking in Idaho Barrack Hussein Obama expressed his support for gun ownership.

Speaking to Move-On.org Barrack Hussein Obama expressed his support for legalizing marijuana.

Speaking in California Barrack Hussein Obama expressed his support for drivers licenses for illegal aliens.

Speaking to his friend and reported cousin running for the Presidency of Kenya , Barrack Hussein Obama expressed his support for his friend, who also supports strict Muslim Sharia law, including putting women in vails.

Speaking to his friend Rezcko, a muslim immigrant from Syria, Barrack Hussein Obama expressed his support for not revealing too much about him to the federal investigators.

Speaking in the Illinois State Senate, Barrack Hussein Obama expressed his opposition to a law that would have stopped the killing of full-term healthy babies.
Speaking to a crowd of Hispanics, Barrack Hussein Obama said he would learn Spanish.

Speaking in Kansas, Barrack Hussein Obama admitted he was actually half-white.

Speaking in front of a national audience on television, Barrack Hussein Obama said that he would have to see how well Bill Clinton could dance before he could consider him a “brother”.

Speaking to national audience, Barrack Hussein Obama said he voted against the war, (or actually would have) and then voted to fund the war when he actually could vote.

Speaking in the Illinois State Senate, Barrack Hussein Obama expressed his opposition, no actually his support, well actually his “I don’t know” 130 times on votes on important legislation.

Speaking in the Illinois State Senate, Barrack Hussein Obama explained that sometimes he hit the wrong button during votes on important legislation.

Speaking in front of crowds in California, Barrack Hussein Obama said I am not a crazy muslim, I am a Christian and I attend a Christian church. (That just gave Louis Farrankhan, radical racist black Muslim, a lifetime achievement award).

Speaking in his own words in the books he wrote Barrack Hussein Obama said:
    - We were always playing on the white man's court -- by the white man's rules.
    - Obama once described the white race as “that ghostly figure that haunted black dreams.”
    - During college, Obama disapproved of what he called other "half-breeds" who gravitated toward whites instead of blacks. - At age 33, he wrote in "Dreams from My Father, that " he found solace in nursing a pervasive sense of grievance and animosity against his mother’s race.
  • Mike_P
Colonel Ray, please provide links to support your claims. You are making disgusting accusations here, laced with more than a bit of bigotry toward Muslims and seemingly at least, anyone with less than lily white skin.

I think you are no more a Colonel than Colonel Sanders. "Sir," I've known many Colonels in my time (as well as majors, captains and seargents) and you're no Colonel.
  • ColonelRay
Ah gee is that the best you can do Mike P. You can find all the support for my comments that you want, but you dont want too......

So I will ask you to comment direct:
Is Obama for late term abortion?
Did Obama tell hispanics yesterday he Bill Clinton can dance before he can cosider him to be a "brother".
Did Obama just come out supporting drivers licenses for illegal immigrants?
Did Obama just come out supporting legalized marijuana?
Did Obama support Railla Odinga for the presidency of Kenya?

Come on tough guy answer these questions directly.........and I am a real Colonel, but since you have likely never met one, your excused for your ignorance.
  • ColonelRay

ColonelRay, you ask, "Why will Obama not use his full legal name? Is he ashamed of it? Ashamed of the name his father gave him? Ashamed of his heritage? I would have some respect for this man if he stood up like a man, instead of dishonoring his family................"

Barack is his given name. When he was growing up his nickname was Barry. I remember many of the people who were clambering for Obama to run for President wished for him to use his nickname of Barry because it was more palatable (and more "electable") for Americans. Barack stuck with his legal name, rather than use the name he had when younger (the "Americanized" name).

Barack also uses the last name of his natural father. Barack did not take the last name of his mother, nor did he take the name of his mother's second husband (Barack was 5 or 6 when his mom married again). It doesn't matter that Barack doesn't use his middle name. Barack uses the name given to him and he is not ashamed of anything about his background.

Lastly, even if he had legally changed his last name to be that of his mother no one would fault him- after all Barack was 2 when his natural father left him. Barry Dunham is a name much more acceptable to Americans than Barack. But he didn't change his name. I think Barack is very proud of his heritage, his family and his name. Besides, what is there to be ashamed of anyway?

That is saying much more than the husband of Hillary. Bill Clinton wasn't even born a Clinton and only changed his last name later in life (he was 14 years old). And of course "Bill" isn't William Jefferson Clinton's legal name....

    So just chill, dude.
  • ColonelRay
to stock boy: Young man you did not answer my question........Barrack Hussein Obama is the same name his father has.............his real given name. You cannot even type it can you? If twenty years ago when Obama claims he became a christian, it might have been wise to drop the Hussein middle name and embrace his newly found faith, but of course he did not........why? because later in Chicago politics the Hussein name would help with his black muslim connections which included his buddy Rezcko a a Syrian muslim and Nation of Islam supporter. Bill Clinton grew up in a very poor family and acheived alot. Barrack Hussein Obama grew up with a silver spoon in his mouth and thinks we should give the Presidency to him, because he is black.........wake up young man
  • StockBoySF
ColonelRay- you're absolutely right. I can't type Barack's full name because he had clairvoyant abilities and at the time he became a Christian he knew that 20 years hence (or however many) he would need to keep his middle name to become successful with muslim terrorists. You're also right that he grew up with a silver spoon in his mouth, is ashamed of his name (and family) and feels that the Presidency is his right. I see the error of my ways. Thank you so much for setting me on the right path with your irrefutable logic. I defer to your superior military experience and the knowledge your years have given you. May the best man win in the Hillary v. Obama contest.
  • Barrack Hussein Obama grew up with a silver spoon in his mouth and thinks we should give the Presidency to him, because he is black.........

That is the MOST ASININE statement I've heard about Senator Obama. And when did you hear this CR? Where did you read this? Did you read his mind? Wow. You win the Debbie Schlussel Award for Confident Inaccuracies. And this fixation on real given names, why don't you work as genealogist? That'll be time well spent.

I await the FBI and CIA investigation into Senator Barack "He's All Conspiracies" Obama. Oops. Forgot "Hussein". Guess I'm a sympathizer. Be gentle when you arrest me. I may explode in laughter.
  • ColonelRay
ok my two young friends you will love this one.

    Where is Obama?
Anne Richards made the theme "Where is George" famous in Texas politics. Well where is Obama? He is not in California, the word is he is not going to New York, He didn't think the 1.6 million DEM voters who voted in Florida or the several hundred thousand who voted for him even deserved a thanks, Michigan was another no show, a state with the highest unemployment rates in the country. Folks, I think we have been part of a scam. Well Obama, wherever you are, come Wednesday morning it hopefully will be over.
You see when it comes down to it, Barrack cannot take a punch. He never praised Hillary when she won New Hampshire, he avoided Michigan, Florida and now New York. Now that California has gone toward Hillary he has turned-tail and run away. And y’all thought Hillary was weak because she almost shed a tear when the entire media was hammering her 24 hours a day for a week straight. Obama even says that his school yard playmates should not be friends (vote) for Hillary if for some reason he does not win the nomination……..talk about a baby, a spoiled child. All I can say to my black friends is dump this guy before he spoils it for when a real African American Man runs for President.
  • cosmoetica
Wow, the Colonel makes Somebody's racial quack theorizing look tame by comparison.

I hear they're still recruiting. Go, Col., go!

"the expectations of the American public, a population that increasingly wants more from government but doesn’t want to pay for it. While I found that statement odd coming from a Democratic staffer"

??? The Democrats have created and fed this phenomenon since the 1930s!
  • DLS
The Baby Boom years in the USA were 1946-1964. You are not a last-year Boomer. Obama is a Boomer, not the post-Boomer the innumerate (and I suspect illiterate and ignorant) keep saying he is.
  • DLS
"this comfort people express with McCain - it baffles me"

Liberals and "moderates" or "centrists" that actually tend liberal like him because often he has behaved as a Democrat and a liberal rather than as a Republican and a conservative.
  • DLS
"Obama once described the white race as 'that ghostly figure that haunted black dreams.'"

It could have been the white sheets, the torches, and the weapons that did this.
  • cosmoetica
Damn, Colonel. Looks like DLS took up that last open seat at the Birchers. To the swift go the worms.
  • ColonelRay
A lot of name calling on here, but NOT one Obama supporter ever has anything substantive to say...........He makes me feel good, he will change things, he moves me,................gush gush, gush...........Why is it that Obama says the rich do not need higher taxes? Why is it that people on the higher income brackets support him? Do any of you out there think we need to make marijuana legal, because I guess we don't have a drug problem in America???

This man who has never had a real job, born with a silver spoon in his mouth and could not even have found the poor side of Chicago without the help of his slum landlord muslim buddy. He is one the dirtiest polticians in the most dirty political cities, and yet you all think he is "change". It would be funny if it were not so sad. Of course according to cosmoetica I am a racist, because I dare ask questions about the annointed black fake christian, likely muslim savior that everyone is enamored by...........

What is most amazing is the women who back this man. In every picture, every comment, the muslim friends he keeps, and his obvious arrogant attitude he treats women like dirt.........................his friends would put you in vails, and his black muslim friends would keep you quiet and subservient to all males. Just like Oprah who made her fortune promoting womens rights, when it came time to step as a women, she decided that the color of a persons skin was more important than anything else. In South Carolina 80% of blacks voted for the blackman. Gee does anyone ever remember any candidate getting 80% of any group in a election? Actually I do....blacks often vote 80% democratic in elections, but the first time a blackman runs they vote race, race, race...........Obama could put a white hood on his head and blacks would still vote for him...............yes there is racism alive and well in America, and it is coming from the black side of the aisle...........
  • cosmoetica
Ok, can we get Joe to officially take Somebody's tiara as most out of touch Right Winger away from him?

The Colonel just landed in David Dukeville.
  • ColonelRay
i guess I am just a right wing nut............Well those of you who want Camelot back with that Kennedy mistique.........................listen up. How well did blacks do under The Kennedy's? Does anyone here not think every single Kennedy male wasn't a serial womanizier, or a drunk or a drug addict..............When you have royalty, you also have serfs, and servants and all the other people who look up at the Castle but never get an invitation to come in. And cosmoetica you still did not answer any of the questions I have asked.............and you never will.................I am older, lived my life and retiring soon, I will get by, your annointed savior will hang with his Harvard buddies and give speeches and act like a rock star, and just like he did when he was a State Rep in Chicago, the poor, the blacks, and the needy will get screwed..............but I guess everyone will feel better,,,,,,,,,,,,coom-by-ya, coom-by-ya, peace; love not war, pass the dope.........................
