The top US firearms lobby emerged from talks with Vice President Joe Biden on curbing violence Thursday saying he cared more about stamping out gun rights than protecting school kids. Biden met a representative of the National Rifle Association (NRA) along with other gun rights groups as part of a…

  1. The NRA has been allowed to run unchecked in this country for decades. Our legislators have given them this power. Is anyone surprised by their reaction?
We have no one to blame but the lawmakers who have turned a blind eye and a palm up to gun violence in this country for years.

Well, it’s a fight to the bitter end…and that’s just to ban assault weapons, etc. When you spoil a child rotten it’s whole life and suddenly say “no”, you get very ugly behavior. I only hope we can finally be the adults for once.

  2. Sheknows nailed it! The you know what is going to hit the fan now and the NRA will pull out all stops to protect it’s own interests. This will be yet another test of backbone among politicians (sorry to say) and will require outrage by the public to spur them along and keep them from caving.

Btw, looking at the graphic above, .22 rimfires should not be lumped in with .223 centerfires when talking about assault type weapons. This is an important technical difference gun control advocates need to learn if they expect to be seen as credible in these discussions.

  3. When you live by PR, expect it to blow up on you from time to time.
Poorly played, despite all good intentions, Biden and whomever.
You have now successfully snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.

  4. “We attended today’s White House meeting to discuss how to keep our children safe and were prepared to have a meaningful conversation about school safety, mental health issues, the marketing of violence to our kids and the collapse of federal prosecutions of violent criminals,” the NRA said.

huh? really? did anyone else laugh at that one?

Translation: (We, the NRA only showed up to let everyone know AGAIN, there is NO intent to negotiate any type of gun control…NRA’s intent is business as usual, buy the politicians contributions and backroom deals .
And you know why we are going to do that?
    Because we can.)

  5. zephyr says: .22 rimfires should not be lumped in with .223 centerfires when talking about assault type weapons.

    You’ve got that right zephyr…

This link: .22 LR vs. .223 Rem. graphically shows the difference when both are fired at metal siding and other objects.

Yet there’s still some who would try and convince you that they’re the same… They’re both “22′s.”

  6. The NRA complained: “this task force spent most of its time on proposed restrictions on lawful firearms owners — honest, taxpaying, hardworking Americans.

“We will not allow law-abiding gun owners to be blamed for the acts of criminals and madmen,” the statement said.

If that is their concern then what are they proposing to prevent criminals and madmen from obtaining firearms? Once they propose a meaningful answer that isn’t just “more guns” they should be allowed a seat at the the table, otherwise they are just being obstructionist.

  7. Thanks Steve!

  8. The NRA has been allowed to run unchecked in this country for decades.

How dare we allow them to express a political opinion! We’ll take out the 1st as well as the 2nd!!

If that is their concern then what are they proposing to prevent criminals and madmen from obtaining firearms?

Well they have been advocates of stricter sentencing and making use of firearms by felons an extremely long sentence. They have also indicated they want better mental health reporting for those that should be disqualified for gun possession under current law.
