I support a national ID card, but also prefer a national biometric database that aims to perfect identification and make it increasingly reliable.

I hope you aren't in favor of a DNA database to verify ID. Even retinal scanning is a problem, not in a libertarian way, but from a IT perspective. Pictures on a RFID card would make some a small fortune with signal blocking card holders.
