It's a smart thing to do politically and basically good for the country, so it only makes sense to head in a more moderate, centrist direction.

Lots of good it's done Pelosi & Reid. They took impeachment off the table and all they got to show for it is zip.

As a moderate I look to a combination of government and the private sector in solving problems.
There is a glaring problem with this when the private sector IS the problem we're trying to solve. Health care is a good example. Our biggest problem in achieving health care for all Americans is the 35% profit and overhead that results from insurance company involvement. That is a HUGE chunk of change, more than enough to cover the 47 million Americans currently without access. Medicare overhead is under 5%.

Add to that the heartless attitude of insurers. They're in business to make money, the more the better. Our national goal is to provide effective health care for all. Our nation and the insurers are at odds about the goal. As long as their goal is to maximize profit, we will have insurers second-guessing doctors and fighting tooth and nail NOT to pay for health care.

Whoever is elected, we need health care policy that maximizes the health benefits for all, not the profit potential of a few.

"Why should the Democrats show any moderation?"

Because if they don't and all we get is another 4-8 years of tragic incompetence and partisan hackery, they'll be out on their backsides, too. Not everyone at the DNC is a complete fool. I think they'll push for a semblance of fiscal discipline, an end to the war in Iraq, and more effective social programs. It's a smart thing to do politically and basically good for the country, so it only makes sense to head in a more moderate, centrist direction.

In 2000, Bush lost the popular vote and probably the electoral college had the votes been counted properly, despite that once in office he went as far right as possible, he showed no moderation, When you lose the popular vote, you govern from the center trying to create consensus, that was the time for moderation. Republicans ruled for 6 years and showed no moderation, so why should the Democrats show any moderation?

there are two aspects to a moderate position, those of policy and those of attitude.

I have to say that this is very funny, considering that the republicans have spent the last seven years calling people who disagree with their policies traitors and claiming that Liberals are not "real Americans", considering that the republicans spent the 90's investigating land deals in Arkansas and impeaching a President who got a Blow-Job while in office while refusing to even subpoena George W Bush for having used the Bill of Rights to wipe his ass.

Patrick, there are two aspects to a moderate position, those of policy and those of attitude.

I agree with you that HIllary Clinton as far left as she's painted by her detractors. Senators are, pretty much be definition, center-left, center-right, or just plain center in their political positions. The requirement to run in state-wide elections nearly ensures that. However, to date her campaign has been conducted on the same, immoderate, fiercely partisan basis that's characterized the politics of the last dozen or more years.

Obama is conducting a substantially more temperate campaign than either Clinton or Edwards. For me that's as or more important than individual policy positions.

As a moderate I find it hard to get excited about any of these candidates and a few of them really scare me.

Oh, get over it!!! We just spent the last eight years with George W Bush, a man who has given us two unending wars that we have either lost or will lose, budget deficits that make Reagan look like a fiscal hawk, has made torture an American export, has let a major American city drown, has let the dollar lose at least 30% of it's value, has had every single social indicator go into the crapper ( Poverty up, Median wages down, Uninsured Americans up, infant mortality up,etc..) under his watch.

How much worse can the next guy do?
