Picking the Winners

Here’s what I submitted this morning in our office poll re: the top-three finishers in Michigan, plus my guesses on the approximate percentage of votes they’ll each receive. For those just tuning in, today’s vote in Michigan is effectively Republicans only, thanks to an ongoing feud between the DNC and Michigan Democrats.

REPUBLICANS

1. McCain 27%

2. Romney 26%

3. Huckabee 16%

As I told my colleagues, my gut says Romney will eke out a win, but my heart hopes McCain will triumph. While I normally don’t recommend letting your heart interfere with your predictions, I made an exception in this case and will likely pay for it later.

Agree or disagree with my guesses, what are your predictions?

It's likely — many will enter the primary in Michigan to vote for McCain and take down Romney. In fact, many Democrats have reason to like McCain.

DLS-Actually, I've heard that liberals may crossover to vote for Romney, because he would be easier to defeat in November for the Democrats, who see McCain as their biggest threat.

If Romney loses Michigan, he's pretty much finished, as he has no chance in South Carolina. If McCain wins, it will be interesting to see who jumps on board with him, as he is highly unpopular among the party elite for his maverick votes.

K, that's an interesting alternative strategy. Romney is RINOish and a simple smiling face. “Michigan is going through a one-state recession.” Wow, that's brilliant.

Romney, like the GOP field in general, really doesn't offer a serious alternative to the Democratic candidates. Typical conservative sites, with reader remarks, explain this and illustrate (often in an entertaining way) why there is dissatisfaction overally with Dem Lite stuff this year (those either predicted to lead or currently in the lead are definitely Dem Lite, and Huckabee is as much like a Democrat as like a Republican).

One more about the GOP candidates from a conservative site.
