Long term success? Must be code for the toxic waste dump of a legacy he'll be leaving – preserved through the next couple terms if at all possible.

At one time Bush said, “As the Iraqis stand up we will stand down.” Or something to that effect. Now Bush is saying, “May the (US) Force go with you- and stay with you forever and ever. Amen.”

Well, it would give us a rationalization (excuse) to reduce our forces and retreat from an occupational and reconstruction role to that of a foreign force posted to aid regional stability, bunkered in a few military bases.

My first thought on this is that it might actually end the war sooner. Some an agreement would not be approved by the Iraqi Parliment anymore than it would be approved by the US congress. If al-Maliki were to sign such an agreement unilaterally it would bring down his fragile government. On top of that al-Sadr would quickly end his truce. Since there are many al-Sadr supporters in the Iraqi Security forces the relative peace we have seen the last few months would evaporate.
