This is more than a little disturbing.
Verizon has applied for a patent on a DVR that would use video and sound monitors to observe you as you watch TV in order to target advertising.
Great! I can see a direct feed to the Homeland Security computers from a militia group watching “Red Dawn”. What could go wrong? Oh, yeah, it already has.
perhaps you remember Winston in 1984, whose television/screen watched him, and he had to find an obscure corner in his apartment which was the only place he could uncomfortably stand to be out of view of ‘the screen’ that monitored all citizens in their homes.
Verizon thinks people will watch tv in the future, like even next year? Bwah ha ha ha. Mobile thy name is beauty to the young.
Doc, those mobiles also have a forward facing camera. I agree with you, this is very 1984-ish sounding and disturbing. Also, agreed, the younger generations are watching TV in the traditional sense.
No one I know under 30 subscribes to “cable” or “satellite” service the use Hulu, Netflix, etc.
If cable ever gets their pricing down to reasonable levels they can get my business back. Oh, and assuming they don’t develop any spy technology like this.
