Senator Muskie&#8217;s wife had been subjected to some harsh criticism, and he was defending her outside on a cold day in New Hampshire. A bit of tearing was portrayed as a potential Commander-in-Chief crying in the face of attacks. Some attributed the ensuing McGovern primary success to this moment.
