Iraq has Vanished from the Primaries

An interesting piece from Corriere della Serra, Italy, translated at WatchingAmerica.com points out that recent successes in Iraq have led to its disappearing from the issue sheet of all candidates, pro and anti-war, Republican and Democrat, alike.

The success of the strategy to strengthen the U.S. military presence in Iraqi cities, the reduction in the number ofl victims of attacks, has not been trumpeted: it has only made the issue slip out of the election….

By Christmas, the number who considered the war in the Middle East the main issue of the campaign had declined to 23 percent – less than the proportion who declared themselves to be more concerned about the risk of recession and the weakness of the dollar.

The reason it has vanished is because we are in a stalemate. The Democrats can't claim we are losing, and the Republicans can't claim we are winning, just that the violence is down. Both parties would just as soon forget about the issue, because both have had significant failures with regard to the war.

I believe that the primary reason that the war in Iraq has moved off most Americans' radars is that the economy appears to be slipping toward recession. Any time that happens, pocketbook issues become ascendant.
