Comments moving to Disqus

NOTE: This post has been moved to the top as we work through the new Disqus comment system on The Moderate Voice. Feel free to test (within reason) and leave any questions, comments, and/or concerns.

TMV Readers,

In an effort increase the site’s overall speed and to add more commenting features, TMV’s comments will be moving to the Disqus commenting system. This will allow threaded comments, avatars, while integrating all comments into a separate forum.

Because of this move, you will have to register on the Disqus site in order to comment. You’ll be able to do this from the post by clicking the Options button. We still do not allow anonymous comments since it opens the us up to too much spam (even though Disqus will filter most of the spam).

This move is starting now so you may experience a little hiccup while we integrate the new commenting system.

UPDATE #1: So far so good. Note this system is only on posts with no comments and future posts.

UPDATE #2: We are compiling a list of HTML codes that work in this system. Furthermore, we are working on some tweaks to address the text size and style across different browsers and platforms. Thanks for your continued patience.

UPDATE #3: Looks like threaded comments will be disabled while we do some style changes to widen the comment area and to accommodate different browsers. Such is life! :(

• This is a test.
• cosmoetica
Is it working?
• cosmoetica
So it seems.
• SteveK
Threaded comments will be great! Will this system be integrated to previous threads of only from here on out?
• Hi guys,

I'm from Disqus and just wanted to personally say welcome. Let me know if you need anything at all.
• Hi SteveK. It will be integrated only in previous posts that have no comments and all future posts. Do the comments look ok?
• SteveK
Do the comments look ok?

I think it's a great move... if blockquotes or relies to comments 'drill down'. Lets see if this works (test)
• I think threaded comments will work out nicely also.
• DLS
Seems to work just fine.
• Very good. We want this to be a smooth transition.
• AustinRoth
Hmm, this will be interesting.
• StockBoySF
Hahaha. This is neat. The font on the comments is much smaller than the on the original posting... but other than that I like it!
• Working on the font size right now. Glad ya like these comments!
• StockBoySF
Thanks, T_Steel!
• GeorgeSorwell
The font is way too small to read.

What happened to all the HTML buttons?
• StockBoySF
Ok, so what are these "points"? Are they like door prizes- except you get one every time you post and then once a month your name is entered for the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow? :)
• Right now George, TMV had to make some sacrifices to improve the access speed. This system doesn't have those HTML buttons currently (they will soon). By moving to this system, it assures TMV will be able to stand traffic spikes better (a big one earlier yesterday damn near brought down the site). So as features are added at Disqus, they will be added here.
• As you comment on other sites with Disqus, you get rated as a good boy/good girl. And a pot of yummy oatmeal is mail to ya! :)

Truthfully, I'm a little in the dark about it myself. Will check out.
• SteveK
If this is bold... this italic... & this underlined...

The BBCodeExtra addon in Firefox will do the coding for you (it's got a great spell check, too.)

If my HTML didn't work... disregard my comment. :)
• StockBoySF
Thanks, T_Steel! Oatmeal is boring but a little honey on top would be great!

And now my points are stacking up.... one point from my first posting and two points from this... I hope Santa doesn't check this site and compare it against his list!

I like the sort options and thread feature- so I think the move to Disqus is a great idea.

Now if folks could at least put their location in their profile that would be neat! I enjoyed reading DLS's comments on the Iowa races since that's where he (or she) lives. A little color always helps!

So can we ding people on this point system if they don't put their location in their profile? Just kidding.... :)

Thanks for your efforts on this!

SteveK--

I found it and downloaded it. Thanks!!
• GeorgeSorwell
Trying again.
• SteveK
I had the same problem at first... Given two choices and I usually screw up the first time!. Lucky for us the menu for the code option that doesn't work can be <s>disabled</s> removed.
• Jim_Satterfield
OK...checking in and it ought to work.
• archangel
how amazing to see people's pictures, people whose comments I have read for so long now. What a great looking crowd
• shaun
Too cool, Tyrone!
• Idiosyncrat
Sooo much faster! Looking good, T-Steel.

Idiosyncrat:

Now that I've seen your mug I better understand those karate chop comments you leave. (!!!)
• Rudi
Yes, what about html tags? Will see,,,
• JSpencer
Greetings earthlings!
• dmf
threaded comments is pretty key, i think. the multitude of ways people usually use to respond to certain previous posts will now go away!
• Rudi
Manual text -test
Block it
• Idiosyncrat
Hai.

Gotta get back to catching flies with chopsticks... c ya.
• Idiosyncrat
Threaded commentary is a double-edged sword...

On one hand you'll have increased interactivity as you know who is replying where more easily. But on the other hand, you'll be scrolling up and down a thread looking for new responses since it's no longer linear. Could also lead to more tangents where people start going back and forth with each other and not factoring in new responses to the post that don't take place in their little sub-thread.

Time will tell if this aspect is a positive development.
• Rudi
Bring back the html tags buttons. I didn't find any info at Disqus about tags.
• Idiosyncrat
Actually, hmmmm, I just noticed that under the "options" button at the top of the comment section, you can sort by "newest" and a few other choices... Guess that neutralizes one of my concerns about having to scroll around looking for new responses.
• Idiosyncrat
Oh look, I'm now "following" you. Not exactly sure what that means, so don't get too excited... ;)

Hey Rudi--

If you use Firefox, you can download an addon called BBCodeXtra that will help you do HTML tags.

After downloading it, just highlight the text you're writing in the box, then right click to get the menu. The HTML choices are on the <s>first</s> second menu selection.

Requires a bit of practice, though!!
• GeorgeSorwell
<s>Strike-through</s> sucks!!
• cinch
The text is so small as to be almost unreadable in Firefox on a Macbook.
• SteveK
try 'strike' instead of 's'...

<strike>for sure</strike> maybe?
• SteveK
NEVER MIND... Guess strike-through doesn't work.

Maybe Tyrone will post of a list of HTML Code that works on this platform.
• GeorgeSorwell
SteveK--

Thanks for helping!

Two days ago, the Clinton campaign reacted to a new poll showing Hillary slipping behind rival Barack Obama by criticizing it as flawed and embracing another survey that showed her with a slight lead.

Now, an updated version of the survey the Clinton campaign preferred - - done by Zogby International - - also shows her trailing the senator from Illinois.

• I'll get the list of HTML codes very soon. Still making sure comments are displayed fine.
• That small, eh? I'll contact Disqus and see if this is an issue regarding Firefox on Macs.
• Holly_in_Cincinnati
OK, I'm signed in now. On to the next challenge!
• cosmoetica
Still signed in?
• cosmoetica
It timed out, but then posted- an odd posting system.
• I'll get things kinks worked out soon enough.
• archangel
whoever has the mac and firefox, go t your firefox perefs andmake sure fonts are set to 12 or 14 point. Also make sure your monitor/display is set to 100% or more Whatever resolution you usually use..

;-)
• ok, back to the days before tag buttons. Let's try this: italics, bold, underline, <strike>strikeout</strike>
blockquote, blah blah blah
and back to normal text
• so, no strikeout... otherwise, works fine

If you use Firefox, try the ScribeFire extension. Compose in WYSIWYG, switch to code view, copy and paste...
• Pete Abel
I'm late to the game. Problems yesterday wouldn't let me comment. trying now.
