Meanwhile, the naive and unrealistic (I am being more kind than I need be) will excoriate the USA for not having done something different, even though we have no real alternative. We have to hope things don't blow up too soon or too greatly, and we have to brace ourselves (not only in Pakistan but in Saudi Arabia and possibly someday in Egypt) for a likely much worse future there.

Yep. Meanwhile, the naive and unrealistic (I am being more kind than I need be) will excoriate the USA for not having done something different, even though we have no real alternative.

We have to hope things don’t blow up too soon or too greatly, and we have to brace ourselves (not only in Pakistan but in Saudi Arabia and possibly someday in Egypt) for a likely much worse future there.

We lose either way, as eventually we will be blamed for Musharaf's repression when he is forced from power. And, for that matter, Mubarak in Egypt (easy to overlook if we look mainly at Musharraf and the Saudis). We support or leave the existing rulers alone because the likely alternatives currently have been seen as worse (fundamentalist and terrorist government alternatives, worse than what exists now). All those who decry any intervention or interference by the USA are the first to blame the USA when something goes wrong, and are angry that the USA Didn't Do Something! [tm].
