Beyond being in different places culturally and in terms of socioeconomic development, Britain's monarch didn't recently suspend parliament nor poorly handle a violent civil war. For the Brits, the monarchy can be a source of pride and nostalgia. The Nepali, alas, have no such luxury.

For better or worse, the Nepali monarchy as a force for unity died with King Birendra in 2001.
