Football for All

I’m no fan of the NFL Network, for both professional and personal reasons. I work for one of the cable broadband companies that has refused to bend to the league’s pressure tactics, and while I’m an avid fan, I think the idea of a 24/7 channel devoted to pro footbal is a waste of time.

But even I have to give the NFL and Commish Goodell props for making the historic Patriots-Giants game (this Saturday night) available on a national basis, including to those who are still watching TV via rabbit ears.

Perhaps Sen. Kerry’s efforts played a worthwhile role, after all, though I suspect it was the threat made be two other Senators that finally forced the team owners to sit up and take notice.

Either way, it’s a good decision and I plan to be sitting with friends Saturday night, watching the game and enjoying a few beers as we root on the Giants. (Apologies to Patriot-Nation. We St. Louis Rams fans are still upset about the Patriots’ 2002 lashing of our hometome team in the Super Bowl.)

So-so on the Rams, but if you (or others) know where it is, I love U. City!

I know exactly where U. City is. Assume you’ve been to the famous Delmar Loop there, where the STL “Walk of Fame” is located?

I lived in University Heights (the national historic district just west of City Hall to the north of Delmar), one mile from the Loop. My favorite restaurant in the Loop and in STL metro is Riddle’s. The owners still recognize me when they see me, and say hello.

Riddle’s is just east of the parking garage, and across the street from the municipal parking lot next to the Tivoli theater. Riddle’s is just west of Subterranean Books. It’s near the county-city boundary.

I’m there at least once a month. Next visit is Jan 15.
