I never understood how Rudy, with all his socially progressive views, ever became a front runner for the Republicans.

The GOP has no depth this year.

Giuliani is running on September 11 celebrity status. (He’s also steering anti-terrorism security work toward companies in which he has an interest, something that would be worse than what we’ve seen with Halliburton and Blackwater if he were to become President and steer federal security work his companies’ way.)

There was a lot of buzz that once GOP primary voters knew more about him, Rudy would drop in the polls. Looks like that turned out to be true.

I never understood how Rudy, with all his socially progressive views, ever became a front runner for the Republicans. But I suppose this just goes to show Rudy is a one-idea man (strong terror credentials- at least that what he wants us to believe). If he had other strengths to tout, he could and would use them to keep himself aloft. As it is he’s just full of hot air and that hot air can only keep his balloon aloft for so long. Now that he’s used up his only (or perhaps greatest) strength he’s losing momentum.

Of course if he hadn’t rolled out his 911 message so early he would not have been a front-runner. Now he’s just a has-been.

Jim Riches, a New York deputy fire chief whose firefighter son was killed during the attack, said the group aimed to raise doubts about the central premise of Giuliani’s presidential campaign — his leadership role on Sept. 11. “If we have to follow him around all 2008 we’ll do it,” Riches said.
