The scummy attacks here as well as elsewhere on the Religious Right prove the charges of anti-religious bigotry that informed people make and that liars on the Left deny.

To "attack" a particular segment of religious believers who insist on their view of God being the de facto, if not de jure state religion does not in any way equate with anti-religious bigotry because the Religious Right is not even close to being all religion. Just because I don't want the beliefs of that branch of Christianity to become the law of the land does not mean that I oppose all religion.

If no state is willing to stand with another state, to help out another state in a Katrina-like disaster then why bother?

Actually, that's exactly what Huckabee did in Arkansas, as you would know if you were among those readers who took the time to read the interview with him to which I posted a link numerous times.

Not that there are guarantees all states would do that, of course. But only a fool would assume it would never happen.

Don't be surprised if Huckabee picks up additional votes from those of us who are better behaved and have higher standards, and are anti-scumbag.

There's nothing wrong with being a state's rights advocate, K. That's called honoring the constitution and constitutional federalism. The problem with Paul is that he has been associated with the true far right, which includes the racists and this nation's most noteworthy terrorist groups.

* * *

As to J-Sat's question, the answer (which would not satisfy Paul and the true fringe) would be that the federal government would primarily consist of the Defense Department (that is, the military), the State Department (our diplomatic corps), the Treasury (which would create and manage this nation's common currency), and so on -- it would return to being a true government, not a service agency or surrogate parent, doing what the private sector should be doing, and failing that, state and local governments, rather than Washington, which is still the American way and the preferred way to those who know and are better.

Paul supporters are crazy if they want to end all foreign engagements of our military (or abolish our diplomatic corps); obviously we have foreign vital interests in this world. We also don't have to be bound to a gold standard; the free market is perfectly compatible with any kind of currency, on a fiat basis or any other, that is allowed to freely "float" and be valued by people worldwide.

I have never seen a Paul supporter answer one simple question. If the federal government is weakened as much as Paul's philosophy seems to indicate, what is the point in having it? Why not break up the country? If no state is willing to stand with another state, to help out another state in a Katrina-like disaster then why bother? War? In order to save as much money as Paul is claiming he can save by cutting the military budget I wouldn't count on the dis-United States Army to have enough power to do much.

Uh,Paul's made some interesting comments--- saying Lincoln should never have started the Civil War, Reagan was a total failure, and the Civil Rights Act of 1964 should never have been passed. He's a states rights advocate, which was the Dixiecrats' platform.

I like his comments about our involvement in the ME and agree with him on preserving our civil liberties, but I'm not sure giving that much power to individual states would benefit minorities, as it removes federal protections for voting rights and hate crimes. Seems a bit too regressive for me.

Ron Paul received contributions from over 100,000 different people this quarter. He received $18,000,000 from those 100,000 people. His support is wide and deep. Look around your town and notice you see RP signs everywhere.
