I still think the Iranians are a threat but not the same level that Bush thinks they are. Iran may be enriching uranium- and we should contain that which goes above and beyond the stated purpose of a civilian nuclear power program.

Why do you think Iran is a threat? Have they invaded any independent countries recently?

I agree with both Entropy and Davebo on this one. Will we ever be able to trust our intelligence community again? Its bad enough that they've been wrong through human error so many times, but the politicization of intel has completely jeopardized the agencies credibility. But Entropy is also correct that someone would have spilled the beans by now if the current report had been faked for political reasons.

The NIE a fake? HAHAHAHA... um, excuse me, HAHAHAHA...sorry, couldn't help myself.

You know, there are several thousands of people in the intelligence community and probably several dozen that directly contributed to this NIE plus several dozen more supporting them. One would think that if the NIE is a lie, then one of these people might sit down in a DC restaurant with a NYT or WAPO reporter and we'd hear a story about it. Unhappy people within the intelligence community have been known to do such things.

I bet if the NIE report were just the opposite (meaning the Iranians were still pursuing nuclear weapons and Bush would therefore be engaged in his war talk), the slant of the article would be:

Bush is trying to manipulate the intelligence agencies so he can go to war with Iran. Bush wants the NIE to report that Iran is still developing nuclear materials. However that is still no reason for Bush to threaten to go to war. In fact even if Iran is pursuing nuclear weapons they won't have then until - at the earliest- several years after Bush leaves office.

Anyway, no matter what the American intelligence agencies report there will be those people in the world who will slant it against the Americans.

I still think the Iranians are a threat but not the same level that Bush thinks they are. Iran may be enriching uranium- and we should contain that which goes above and beyond the stated purpose of a civilian nuclear power program.

The other aspect of this is that we (US) need to be leaders in securing all nuclear materials- not just the nuclear materials in the US, but we need to help other countries implement safeguards on their nuclear materials. This was something John Kerry campaigned on back in 2004, and Bush was forced to say that he agreed with it and had a plan... But I never saw anything happen on this after Bush won reelection. The best time to tackle problems is to do so as soon as we identify them. The worst time to tackle problems is when those problems have developed into an attack on the US. It really perplexes me that this is a problem Bush can tackle (what country doesn't want it's nuclear material safe?) but hasn't done much on it. I just hope the Iranian nuclear material doesn't end up in the hands of terrorists... I wouldn't put it pass terrorists to acquire some of it under Ahmedinejad's watch...

It helps to know that cf2r and both Denécé and Rodier are long-term neocon fellow-travellers, doesn't it?

Rodier has previously argued that the Left and Al Qaeda both want to destroy the West and that the former Red Brigade and other far left terror groups have aided AQ (on zero evidence except his interpretations of their ideology).

This is the problem with politicizing intelligence.

Neither side will trust it again. Do you think the office of the VP could create a Iran intel team as they did in 2002?

And the worst aspect of it is this will carry forward for years.
