I guess I've always been astonished at the "wisdom" of our talking heads over the past year in projecting a race that is unique in American history -- a full year longer than anyone has ever seen before, and coverage that conveniently was a way of NOT talking about not merely a failed presidency, but, increasingly, a disastrous presidency for this republic.

Does ANYONE remember that for a solid year, virtually every bit of "pundit" analysis about the election and candidates has turned, in the past month, into sheer hogwash?

WHO wants this babble on center stage? Or, more to the point, why do we listen to it? They didn't know, they don't know, and they're a good bet to CONTINUE not to have a clue. The ... pundits, I mean.

That said, since we hit that magical ONE YEAR to the election, everything has become fluid, and everything is now in play.

But we need to spend that after Christmas "Top Ten" week aiming a lot of justified scorn at the pundits and "news" outlets that have served us -- and the Republic -- with such criminal ineptitude.

And, if the nomination process is over by February (as now seems increasingly likely), can we PLEASE spend a few months figuring out WHY our primary process is so broken, and HOW we can fix it before 2012?

Please?

Note that the Zogby poll is a telephone survey and not the dubious internet survey that got a lot of attention a few weeks ago. I like that Obama's national numbers look strong. I bet Huckabee's national numbers would collapse once people learned about some of his social views; most people see him as a genial politician who speaks from the heart. Also, his policy positions are very superficial as a whole.

McCain would be much stronger for the GOP on substance and character. But does he have the money and organization to go the distance. He ran out of money a few months ago and, unlike Kerry in 2003-04, he does not self-finance. Money is going to be key for the GOP because the RNC wants to have some money left over to bail out the dirt-poor RCCC and RSCC. Romney would help in that department. Huckabee doesn't have much money, but he's got a dedicated core of volunteers who will make a big difference.

1. I bet they'd beat Giuliani-McCain or McCain-Giuliani easily.

2. Bwahahahaha. President Obama, Vice President Clinton.

3. We'll see how things really are after February 5.
