If moderates want to stop the influence of extremists, they're going to have to do it the old fashioned way: earn it. Put your money where your mouth is- find financial backing to get your own message out, rather than trying to change the rules so that the big money groups can't get theirs out. Because guess what? If you change the rules that way, the only thing that happens is that the big money guys find ways to spend their money under the table instead of in a more transparent and traceable manner.

If you want to put moderates into politics, public financing of campaigns is the last thing that you would propose. Public financing would empower the most extreme non-governmental organizations and give them the ability to elect their hand picked candidates.

If you want to elect more moderates, redistricting would go much further. But I doubt the minority Republicans or the majority-minority district supporting Democrats would ever go for it.

However, you will probably get your wish after the collapse of the Republican party is complete and everyone votes in the Democratic primary.
