Best Behavior
If they issued grades for deportment, the six Democratic Presidential candidates who took part in today’s Iowa debate would all have earned A’s. No bickering, backbiting or mud slinging.
The good behavior started at Reagan airport en route when Hillary Clinton apologized to Barack Obama for her now-departed New Hampshire co-chairman’s snide statement on Obama’s “drug use” and carried over onto the stage as the candidates, for the most part, gave crisp answers on the issues with a minimum of reaching around to pat their own backs.
If there was a transcendent moment, it came after Joe Biden’s defense against charges of racist comments when Barack Obama went beyond politics to create a moment of grace.
“I’ve worked with Joe Biden, I’ve seen his leadership,” Obama said. “I have absolutely no doubt about what is in his heart and the commitment that he has made with respect to racial equality in this country. So I will provide some testimony, as they say in church, that Joe is on the right side of the issues and is fighting every day for a better America.”
Everyone on the stage today seemed capable of restoring sanity and good sense to the Oval Office.

This is good to see, although my cynical side suspects some of HIllary’s graciousness is based on a realization that every time she attacks, her poll numbers drop. Regardless, it’s refreshing for cordiality to return to the stage.
The same was equally true with the equally placid Republicans, who probably would threaten to do less harm. Dems have a lot of baggage to overcome.
“Dems have a lot of baggage to overcome.”
DLS, you really are tickling my funny bone here. Baggage? You want baggage? Place your hands on both sides of your head, and turn it toward the right. Now open your eyes!
I’m not denying the other side has baggage of its own.
The head baggage handler is Cheney , with a slight nod to his assistant W.
Every single candidate seems to have some major obstacle to their electability. With Hillary its the Clinton scandals, Obama his inexperience, Edwards his inability to even bring in the votes from his home state in ’04. On the GOP side we have Rudy’s character issues, McCain’s unpopular immigration stance (though I really think the fact that he worked with Senators like Kennedy and Feinstein that’s hurting him with conservatives!), Fred’s late entry into the race and lack of vigor, and Romney’s Mormonism. Huckabee is doing well in Iowa, but will fail to catch on with the general public due to his past statements on evolution, gays and AIDS. So they all have a hurdle to overcome.
As for the Dem debate, it was even more of a yawner than the GOP debate. zzzzzzz How can anybody seriously be pleased with this performance?
