I looked at the votes on GovTrack. The precious, few Republicans who could bring themselves to vote for this bill were reliably moderate, like Wayne Gilchrest and Walter Jones. Roscoe Bartlett voted for it too, even though he's labeled as a "radical Republican".

I was shocked by the Democrats who voted no, except for the utterly worthless Jim Marshall. (Please, NRCC, get rid of him for me!) Maxine Waters? How can that be? Barbara Lee? Why did she do that? Dennis Kucinich? Thank goodness I already vowed never to vote for this joke of a presidential candidate!

Maybe I need to read this bill more carefully, because something is just not right here.

Don’t they realize that they are making Pres. Bush’s “we do not torture’ statements out to be lies?
And what does that do for our credibility

The world has known that Bush was lying about this and other policy matters for a long time. Even his actions on global warming and overcoming our addiction to oil are just window dressing. I learned back in 2001 to ignore his words and look at his actions. The group of Republicans that have been backing him up on torture, and other issues lost their humanity a long time ago.

Wait and see if it changes after Clinton is elected (and Bush is gone, obviously).

"Any guesses which party makes up the bulk of the 199 no votes?"

Ummm... gee, could it be the same folks who have been rubber stamping the little Texan all along? Who could imagine!

The Bush people must be viewed as an aberration on this issue. Their behavior hasn't been sought before, and obviously their successors will be more concerned about this than in the pre-Bush years.

Hopefully also there will be clarification of how captured terrorists or terrorist suspects, or other francs-tireurs are treated. Normally they are criminals and typically subject to execution (after being found to have committed attacks on our forces).

It certainly is a life altering experience to hear Senators In Congress and on national news defend and encourage the use of waterboarding.

Don't they realize that they are making Pres. Bush's "we do not torture' statements out to be lies?
And what does that do for our credibility?

Redefining torture won't work on the world stage,
BTW, where everyone knows just what waterboarding is.

I'm past being disturbed. I'm just amazed and aghast.
