Americans should begin boycotting China products. They are poor quality, unsafe and their only advantage is that they give WALMART a hefty profit margin.
The plague of cheap, dangerous products imported so profitably for a few is an example of good old laissez-faire capitalism at work.
But don’t worry; the free market solves all problems. In time, after enough American children have been sickened, injured and killed, word will get around and parents will stop buying cheap toys from China.
You see, the beauty of the unregulated free market is that it’s automatic that way. No nasty government interference is required. And to add to its wonderfulness, no tax money is required! All it costs is the health and lives of some of our children.
I don’t think protectionism or permanent boycotts will help. The market place is global, like it or not, and trying to buck the globe is impossible for any one country. If we try, we’ll pay dearly.
It’s far better to concentrate on ways to make the system work. Importers and inspecotrs have to asssume roles of real responsibilty for what is imported, instead of just speeding the importation process along, no matter what.
The US also has to get more serious about the kind of contracts that are negotiated. Europe is trying to, and it could be a collaborative effort.
So far, it has been too much a laissez fare attitude, and that has to be stopped. Between, opting totally out and doing nothing, there are much better options available. We have to pressure our governemtn to respond by using those options.
