DLS, you are so in the extreme that everything looks left to you, and I’ve behaved exemplary when dealing with folk like you; in contrast to the way extremists on both sides treat everyone else.

I assume you're being delusional here (if not simply dishonest) rather than trying (and failing) to be a comedian.

Oh, well. What else to expect on a non-moderate site?

Yes, Clinton, who brought us the NAFTA flush, who brought us a worse environmental record than Reagan, who kowtowed to corps. Yes , real, Commies there.

Cosmo, you've been off your rocker in the past (and behaved very poorly) about other subjects and you're wrong once again here. [sigh]

As for me, I want to know more about what is sought by the candidates, such as this single, relatively straightforward example (with larger consequential indications, not merely implications), the subject itself of a good deal of commentary, shows.

'Hillary Clinton is hardly conservative; her fake “centrist” or “moderate” act is simply being done prior to the election to avoid repelling voters in large numbers. Once elected, she is likely to move substantially leftward'

More of the delusional Far Right meme of the Clintons as Leftists only proves how off the chart the utterers of such are.

Why go nuts about this? Hillary Clinton is hardly conservative; her fake "centrist" or "moderate" act is simply being done prior to the election to avoid repelling voters in large numbers. Once elected, she is likely to move substantially leftward, even if she has learned lessons from 1993-1994 and doesn't satisfy the unrealistic few.

Clinton is definitely the favorite and is assumed to be the Dem nominee unless and until the others show they truly are competitive -- and the proof will be in the primaries and caucuses, which will start in only a few weeks.

I wonder how Edwards will stand as a future VP candidate or selection compared to Biden or [gag] Dodd.

Dave,
You and Powerline may be both correct. Democratic supporters of Edwards and Obama may have firebombed this poll.

Overall, though, I don't think the polling is bad for Hillary at all at this point. She leads in Missouri, New Mexico, Arkansas, Kentucky and Ohio, and is competitive in Virginia, Florida, North Carolina and Colorado. She'd beat Giuliani quite easily if she holds those states.

Who cares what the polls say. Whoever the Republican nominee is, he will have little chance of winning.

All of the polling and hand wringing is just the media's way of trying to keep the race interesting. They do not want a replay of 1996 when the race was over before Labor Day.

The most likely scenario is for Senator Clinton and Giuliani to be the nominees before labor day, 2008 and with the daily polls showing how far the Republicans are behind.

Of course, the media is really trying to avoid discussing the prospects of the Democrats getting 60 seats in the House. Even if Giuliani pulls off a major upset he will probably sign most anything but in front of him by the Democratic controlled congress.

In the end, the Senate races are really more important than the Presidential races.

In the past Zogby has routinely oversampled Democrats. What if that's the case with respect to this set of polls?

Romney does get the nomination he’d be easier to beat than Giuliani (but some anti-Mormon sentiment could also be at play here and presumably the Romney campaign could confront that if need be).

I wonder where anti-mormon sentiment will/would be a stronger force, if within primaries or in the general election. Within primaries you have many evangelicals who probably object to Romney's faith, but on the other hand aren't very likely to like Giuliani and may harmlessly vote for Huckabee or Brownback. On the other hand, in the general election you will have secular people voting who may distrust mormons based on a notion that a Mormon can't be a moderate like a Christian can be, but on the other hand people who think that are probably unlikely to vote for a Republican candidate.

I'm still hoping for a miracle that gives Obama the nomination, but given the Democratic tendency of nominating the least sincere looking and most hated by Republicans candidate, Hillary seems a shoe-in. On the Repub side I dunno what to think. I used to think that Giuliani would be a good candidate, and was actually considering voting for him if Hillary got the nomination, but he's gone so macho-man-hawk-I'll nuke your ass into the 12th century if you look at me funny that I really don't want his finger on the button.

Don't believe polls: ever, ever, ever! No matter what they say. It is a method political scammers use to avoid policy discussions. If you say 74 percent of Americans dislike the Iraq war, all you have is numbers, and you can stop arguing personally about the issues with it. Even the low congressional approval rating doesn't tell anywhere near a full story, and is once again a way to maneuver around actually policy talk which may force a cloud of truth to hang over people's heads. Every time you quote a poll like this, you are furthering media framing, and that is, in large, a betrayal of any genuinely insightful discussion. We wind up talking about the poll instead of the candidates and what they stand for, and what, in all practicality, that means.
