Mitt Romney is prepared to fend off attacks during Wednesday’s debate by President Barack Obama on the Republican’s derisory remarks about the 47 percent of Americans who pay no federal income tax, a Romney aide said. Romney has been hounded over a video secretly recorded at a May fundraiser in which…

Looks like the old saying is true..denial is not just a river in Egypt.
The reason those voters are undecided is that they haven’t been given a credible alternative. The voters have had six years to size up Mitt Romney, and even after the last year or so of intensive campaigning, primaries, and hundreds of millions spent in attack ads, they still don’t think Mitt is a better choice than Obama.
If politics were a bar, here’s how it would look:
It’s almost closing time. Last call for alcohol, and the DJ is going to spin just one more slow song for the night. There’s a guy who has been dancing all night with the ladies, and it is looking very much like he’s going to take one home tonight.
There’s another guy who has also been there all night, and it is looking very much like he’s going home alone. It isn’t that he hasn’t been trying. He’s been hitting on the ladies all night long, but he just doesn’t have game.
Mitt’s campaign is that guy who’s looking to hook up right before closing time. You can see the desperation. Yeah, he might pull it off, but it ain’t going to be pretty.
Generally, I think it is sad that any campaign, including Democrats like myself, should resort to hidden cameras and microphones to level damaging criticism at an opponent. Isn’t that what Watergate was basically about–getting a leg up on your opponents through subterfuge?
Personally, I do not think the use of the word victims, was totally uncalled for because I think many middle income Americans might JUSTIFIABLY consider themselves victims of an unregulated Wall Street and the whims of the rich and powerful. In my opinion, the most damaging segment of Romney’s recorded Statement, was the claim that many of the 47% failed to take responsibility for their own lives. If he had taken a moment to think, he should have realized that many Americans, now dependent on food stamps, social security, disability payments and even charitable organizations, were, for most of their lives, competent and responsible wage earners who always dutifully provided food, shelter and love to their children. The overall tone of his campaign strategy discussion may not change the minds of many in his base who are in total agreement with him, however, many of his myths about the 47% are vividly untrue and reveal a real disdain for those in the lower classes who have failed to be completely self-sufficient.
If Romney really wants to avoid being penalized in the court of public opinion, he will not merely put a new spin on his words, but should actually make a clear and honest apology for them! In fact, much of what he said is completely untrue, so why try to smooth it over with new suspiciously insincere words?
I know that Romney can come across as quite slick and polished after doing his homework and that he will not be a pushover, but, I am hopeful that Americans will become aware that he really is not concerned about middle and lower class income people–at least not nearly as much as Obama! We all know anything can happen, but in the present, Obama is enjoying a much deserved advantage and, I am hoping, as a Democrat, that things stay that way!
cjjack,
Your right about Romney lacking “game” and failing to impress us with his personality, but unfortunately, most voters are prone (or conditioned) to blame only the man in the oval office for every failure they have witnessed. The truth is, things did begin to improve soon after Obama took over, and, Wall street has enjoyed recovering and, possibly surpassing, its former wealth. Since Obama is a true diplomat, he decided not to place threatening pressures on the banks that were bailed out–fully expecting that they would soon return the favor by helping to provide jobs the American people. There were also probably few economists that were able to foresee the eventual unfolding of this recession. We watched many of them reframe and reforcast their expectations for the economy over and over again!
The fact that voters have remained so supportive of the President, despite all of the letdowns they have had, indicates that they are not just down on Romney for being a political nerd–It means that many of them truly doubt if their lots will actually improve under someone with Romney’s economic policies. This is nothing less than extraordinary! Perhaps some of them are realizing that the real question should not be whether they are better off than they were four years ago, but rather, if they would have been as well off as they presently are, without Obama making the unpopular and bold decisions that he HAD to make to prevent a complete meltdown.
Monday morning quarterback politicians find it easy to throw stones, but, they are not now, nor have they ever been, at the helm during such a time of dire need. I can only hope that if Romney IS elected, his honeymoon of freedom from impunity when condemning anything at will, will be rudely interrupted once he, and he alone, bears full responsibility for what his actions bring!
I just had to correct my grammatical error in my last post.
Near the end of the last paragraph, I should have said something like “his honeymoon of freedom AND impunity, when condemning anything at will.” I really do understand that “freedom from impunity,” would imply that he could never escape punishment for his actions, but of course, I meant just the opposite.
The Republican Convention failed to define Romney to voters. He spent the last few years flip-flopping on just about every issue, trying to be everything to every voting block, and it made him weak. Romney comes off as a slick used-car salesmen who just tells you what you want to hear.
Many were left wondering who the real Mitt Romney was and what his positions truly were. The 47% video, among other comments in the video, has defined Romney in many of those voters eyes. What better way to see the man behind the campaign than to catch him speaking candidly.
For example from the video, his view on how to recover the economy? DO NOTHING
Anyone who is still on the fence at this late point in time should do the country a favor and stay far, far away from any polling place. As for Romney, he has little to lose at this point so expect him to do something memorable at the debate.
You’d think that if Romney had a good explanation that he would have whipped it out by now.
“Yeah, he might pull it off, but it ain’t going to be pretty.”
Lol, exactly.
How does one exactly “Prepare” for the 47% attacks that are coming? Is he going to have one of his Secret Service bodyguards answer the question for him? “Mr. Romney, when you clearly stated in plain English that you think 47% of Americans can not be expected to take responsibility for their own lives, was there something you’d like to add to that so you don’t sound like such a jackass? This is America after all, and despite all the times you’ve shoved your foot in your mouth we clearly are willing to forgive and more importantly forget, time and again, this absurd reduction of a complex issue, if you can offer us something distracting.”
There is no answer to that question.
Gov Romney should immediately apologize to the troops that he insulted, active, prior service and retired. Then he should drop out of the race and suggest the other republicans help the president dig the country the rest of the way out of the hole that the George W, Bush policies buried us in.
