President Bush, who sincerely believes that General Musharraf is a true democrat, must be really pleased at the Pakistani Supreme Court judgement. “In a decision designed to legitimize the election of the Pakistani president, Gen. Pervez Musharraf, the country’s Supreme Court today dismissed a final legal complaint challenging his right to be re-elected while also chief of the army,” reports The New York Times.
“The ruling by the court, filled with judges loyal to General Musharraf, ended the legal maneuvering in the court that was the original catalyst for the general’s imposition of de facto martial law on Nov. 3, and paves the way for him to be sworn in again as the nation’s leader. One further small step, which will give final approval to his election victory, is expected from the Election Commission Friday.
“Some Western diplomats said it was still possible that the general would be sworn in as president again while still head of the army because once he relinquished his military position he would become a weaker head of state.
Meanwhile “the American ambassador to Pakistan, Anne W. Patterson, visited one of the stations, Geo TV, earlier this week. She issued a statement afterward urging the government to allow all the television stations to resume broadcasting.
“In unusually blunt criticism by a Pakistani government official, a defense lawyer for General Musharraf, Ahmad Raza Kasuri, accused Ms. Patterson and other American diplomats of interfering ‘in our internal affairs’.”
so what, right wingers hates liberals so much that they would probaly rewarded the saudi terrorist a nuclear bomb if that is a way to anger the liberals.
liberals were screaming pakistan and saudi arabia from the beganning, and the right winger hatred of them was so strong that they rewarded pakistan with billions of american dollars. they hate liberals so much because liberals pointed out that 15 of the 19 hijackers were saudi arabian, that they rewarded saudi arabia a port along the eastern coast (thank goodness there was outcries against it and the deal fail) and rewarded saudi arabia with 20 millions dollars worth of arms.
so what did you expect from pakistan. you are now suddenly outrage over the general/president of pakistan. i believe that if liberals even said one more thing about the humen right violatio commited by the president of pakistan, the right winger would reward them with more nuclear arms and used american soldiers to enage in the human right violations if that will make the liberals angrier.
Pakistan is truly not a left/right issue. It’s only a Bush issue in that Pakistan became necessary tor the battles with terrorists.
I think it’s equally futile to keep talking about Bush’s Musharaff. Think it thrrough! What can America really do in the current, extremely complicated situation? The US can’t solve Pakistan’s problems witht he wave of a magic wand. Actually, if it interfered too much, it would be villified.
It’s unfortunate that there seems to be no strong replacemtn for Mushraff. It’s condemnable that he seems to be rigging the election by shutting down the independent media that would allow opposition candidates a voice. The reality is that he US can’t send in tanks to undo what he has done, no matter how counter-productive his actions may be.
The top concern is to secure the nuclear material. As long as Musharaff is in charge, the US has to deal with him. There is no other choice. The head of state can’t by bypassed; that’s not the way Pakistan works.
Blaming America for all the troubles is just one way to avoid looking at what ails Pakistan from within.
The Pakistanis, like the Afghhanis, have their own choices to make, as well, in forging their destiny
They don’t want to fight the extremists; They don’t want any trouble. They don’t want interference.. So, how would the complaiers secure the nuclear materals and get rid of terrorism? Ranting and compalinint about Bush and the US isn’t going to get you very far.
So, what’s the better plan?
