Julie Meyers was already on shaky ground in terms of her confirmation to the top Immigration post in the country due to her lack of actual experience in the area of immigration. Now….well, I wouldn’t get those new business cards printed yet.
Costume flap imperils immigration post – Yahoo! News.
“Myers, director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, ran into trouble earlier this month after she and two other agency managers gave the “most original” costume award to a white employee who came to the agency’s Halloween party dressed as an escaped prisoner with dreadlocks and darkened skin.”
It’s scary to think so many people in power, and in line for power, are such idiots. And this is not original; it’s old and tired. I try to put myself in the mindset of someone who would find this entertaining and deserving of recognition, but I can’t. It’s beneath me and so are they.
Lets not forget who her older relative is – General Meyers. I wonder how she feels about a flat tax and abortion, connections and loyalty trump competence.
Her defenders try to paint theis as a mere lapse of attention.
To award a prize, however, some attention must have been paid, one would think.
It is a certain midnset, and I find it easy to believe, since I read blogs. This represents one prominent sector of the US.
this is why no one who has worked in the Bush White House ever needs to work in politics or the government again. First of all, when President Bush is under constant attack and every decision is being watch, his staff should have refuse to put forth any name that would draw attention. Also, at a time when Republicans were running against quotas in Michigan and other states, why should Bush’s Advisors let him appoint an obvious unqualified quota appointment.
Does no one in the Bush Administration realize that the rest of the world will nitpick everything they do? Are they that insulated for the rest of the world?
Maybe the Bush people will never work in government again, not because of BDS, but because they will be recognized as more incompetent and damaging as the WORST of the Carter mess.
I can see why it would be desirable for Bush apologists to imagine Bush detractors as all being in various stages of BDS. It’s a convenient mindset that permits a disregard or for little things like the actual record, consequences, and accountability. Hey, forget that stuff! They all have BDS!
Back to the original subject though – I think the links mentioned in the article having to do with nepotism would be the greater concern, although the halloween costume award shows a lack of good judgement and sensibility at the very least. Talk about being “insulated”.
She does however seem to have done a pretty good job. She has improved the admin of the agency, is supported by the employee union, and even has the support of the main black employee group. It was stupid but since she has been doing a decent job by all accounts I’m not sure what the benefit to removing her would be. Lack of experience would of been an issue a year ago but now that she has been running the place for a year? I haven’t really seen any solid reasons for her removal.
I think the Bush administration doesn’t care if it looks like they are guilty of nepotism or cronyism. What they care about is taking care of their own and hiring people who won’t write tell-all books about systemic incompetence.
Isn’t Julie Myers the wife of Sec Chertoff’s chief of staff? This administration is the most incestuous that I can remember. The only way you do get hired is if you’re related to a bigwig, were a big donor in 2000 or 2004, or went to Liberty University.
