I wouldn't attack Dodd at all when it comes to the name of the best-known organization in Egypt or any other organizations about which he may have simply made a convenient, collective reference, as innumerable organizations exist in the Middle East with "Islamic," "jihad," or "brotherhood" in their names. The results were not respected- the West began a policy of economic sanctions aimed at getting Hamas to moderate its message- which did not work. Every Republican administration has also accepted the reality of having to support dictators- Reagan supported Pinochet, Eisenhower replaced a nationalist Iranian with the Shah. All presidents have supported the royal family in Saudi Arabia. Bush claims to favor the spread of democracy but in reality, he only supports pro-Western regimes like Musharaff and Maliki. True democracy in the ME will continue to result in the election of candidates from terrorist organizations, because the region is presently highly anti-American, and the terrorists offer an alternative to our influence and regional presence.
