One of the many definitions of Irony is “the indirect presentation of a contradiction between an action or expression.” There might be a better word to describe the reaction to Mexico’s law on driver’s license in comparison to its criticisms of Americans who don’t want to allow illegal immigrants the right to have driver’s licenses. Hypocrisy just seems too easy a label.
The question of whether to give driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants has ignited a national debate in the United States. Yet in Mexico, the biggest source of immigrants to the USA, there’s no debate: If you’re not in the country legally, you can’t get a driver’s license.
All of Mexico’s 31 states, along with the federal district of Mexico City, require foreigners to present a valid visa if they want a driver’s license, according to a survey of states by USA TODAY.
Not legal? No Mexican driver’s license for you – USATODAY.com
Some countries practice torture. Should we?
Some countries have repressive military regimes.
Should we?
I’ve always believed that we should stay informed about how other countries operate.
The purpose for that is ti see if we can learn from then, not to emulate them.
We are responsible for our own policies and should make judgements accordingly.
Mexico, BTW, is not my idea of a role model.
LOL – The Mexicanos aren’t as estupido as Western gringos. Germans and American estupido – si, Mexicans – no.
Of course, if the illegal aliens were potential Republican voters instead of potential Democratic voters, then Spitzer would not have made the proposal and the Democratic candidates would have felt comfortable being against drivers licenses for illegal aliens.
Also, has anyone else noticed that Senator Obama refuses to use the word “illegal” but instead opts for the politically correct “undocumented.”
SD – It’s along way from drivers licenses to registered Demonocrats. Keep up the good work, any inroads by Rove/Bush for Hispanic votes other than Miamia and the Rufino’s of Michigan are evaporating very fast.
Rudi, Have you never heard of motor-voter bills, no picture ID lawsuits for voting, chain migration, anchor babies, identify theft. The Democratic Party is going out of its way to encourage non-citizens to vote.
Ever policy pushed by the Democrats is to allow as many illegal aliens as possibleinto the U.S. and then put all of them on the road to citizenship and automatic Democratic voting.
Bush and Rove were idiots if they thought they could attrach Hispanic votes. The idiotic efforts managed to alienate large numbers of Republican voters while giving the Democrats more Hispanic votes.
Maybe someone should ask the Democratic candidates how they plan to nationalize health care and lower greenhouse gass admission while maintain open borders and unlimited immigraiton?
So I have to have a valid Visa to get a drivers license in Mexico.
Yet I can stay for 180 days in Mexico legally without a Visa?
And off topic but… Have you ever noticed that as Americans you only need a Visa to travel to countries you’d probably never want to go to anyway?
If they were honest and arrogant, just as the relic(t)s in New York I encountered would say, they’d say reflexively, “We’ll just have to raise taxes, of course.”
(“We’ll begin with large new taxes on motor vehicle fuels. Americans have long been undertaxed and we’re tired of their complaints about government taxes and spending. Taxes are the price of civilization.”)
(“Civilization” = entitlements and buying more Democratic votes.)
How does Mexico respond to illegal aliens? hmmm
Yet I can stay for 180 days in Mexico legally without a Visa?
A few years back they did away with the “working Visa” and only required a Passport. A visa for semi-permanent status – si., a passport for all else.
It’s amazing how people run right past the topic of the post to air their favorite anti-immigrant posts.
Spitzer’s LIMITED USE license proposeal was a reavtion to complaints about what happens when unlicensed and uninsured drivers get into acctidents.
The fact is that illegals drive no matter what the laws are. As long as they are not deported, instead of being hired for low-wage jobs, they have to be dealt with somehow.
But instead of facing up to that, people use the opportunity to just complain, complain, complain, without offering a single solution WITH ENOUGH SUPPORT to pass muster.
One camp rants about X, and the other rants about Y. Neither can have it completely their way, and until they recognize that, someone has to deal with the nitty-griity aspects of living with large numbers of illegal immigrants. Whan someone tries to do that, he’s shot down. Why? Because chaos is better than some sort of order while we wait for an overall resolution?
To compare iu to Mexico is not an irony. It is irrelevant.
