The fact of the matter is that if Mitt Romney was honest about what his Church really teaches about people who belong to other Christian churches no one other than a Mormon would ever vote for him.

Edited by a TMV blogger to leave the opinion but delete the proof-texting.

I agree with domajot about McCain laughing off the attacks on him as politics, "To condone is to encourage."

To take this thought a little further- Bush views politics as a game to be wonrefuses to negotiate with the Democrats at all costs. Certainly politics is about ideology and all politicians should fight for what they believe in. But at the same time politicians (especially Bush) have to realize they represent a diverse group of people and you can't have your way 100% of the time (except Bush who does seem to be getting his way 99% of the time). What's so totally and terribly wrong with today's politicians is that that can't negotiate and compromise. And while politics may be dirty and we expect games to be played, it is not acceptable when politicians use bigotry (and other un-American) values as a way to slam their opponents to win their fight. As domajot said, "To condone is to encourage" is absolutely right. I think we want politicians to support American values. If a politician - or any leader for that matter - supports bigotry (or other un-American value), then that makes it easier for bigots to propagate and much harder for their victims to survive. And in the end we are all victims when our leaders do not have the balls to stand-up for American values. I for one do not want a President who thinks the promulgation of bigotry- under any guise or excuse- is acceptable.

Thanks, Joe, for your vigorous stand against all forms of religious intolerance in politics.

Your instincts are correct. Anti-Mormons are anti-Semites in training.

Hasn't anyone else thought that perhaps this can be linked to the same group that is paying for the negative ads in SC for McCain? It was the first thought from me.

Wen in an interview, some 2 years ago, McCain was asked how he felt about the adoped daughter smear, his reply was:: "That's just politics."
He laughed it off; he literally laughed.

WRONG ANSWER.
To condone is to encourage.

On a sidenote, I'm surprised and dismayed by how much money some folks are willing to pay for a dive into the septic tank. These campaign tactics aren't cheap.
