Look, she’s on CNN tonight in the debates.
What do you call it when a person talks about how strongly they’ve made things work legislatively, despite obstacles that men have put in their way? Wouldn’t that be the Gender card?
What do you call it, when a person complains when media comments on their age, face, hairdo, manner of dress? Gender card, no?
What do you call it when a person gives extra thought to dressing in a way that is careful and thought out, sort of in the Goldilocks mode, not too soft, not too cold, but somehow ‘just right’ according to some formula kept in a safety deposit box at Fort Knox? This seems like Gender card being played.
What do you call it when a person carefully crosses their legs when seated and makes much of rearranging the folds of their clothes so nothing that shouldn’t be seen, isn’t? Seems like Gender card, doesn’t it?
What do you call it when a person puts their fingers delicately to their lips while they’re listening to other debaters? Gender card, right?
What do you call it when a person bats their eyes? Gender card?
What do you call it when a person is interrupted in the debate and smiling sweetly, they say some version of, ‘Come on you guys, I’m speaking.’ Definitely Gender card.
If these are playing the Gender card, then someone ought to tell all the male candidates to just quit it already. We’ve had enough of men playing the Gender card. Honestly. 200 years of men playing the Gender card. Geez. It’s SO over.
CODA
I know, I know, my try at comedy might not be ready for prime time? In my other life I just wanted to make people laugh. I hope you are. At least a little. And if you watch the debates, the batting of eyelids by all candidates goes on fairly consistently. It’s one of the body’s cues, actually, that a person is thinking and formulating. So, batting those baby blues, browns or greens, is actually a sign of lights on, yes, someone really is home in there.
She’ll exploit it — reverse sexism (what sex are most corrupt politicians you know, and politicians who are too conservative for the liberals here on the “Moderate” [sic] Voice?) will be a bonus for her, particularly among young, naive, or activist female voters. Now add Bush-o-phobia anti-GOP sentiment!
Ok DLS. We get it that you feel that the moderate in The Moderate Voice doesn’t ring true. Sheesh!
Of course she’ll exploit it. She’s a Clinton. Isn’t that what they always do. Uh.. Wait.. Well.. *SIGH*
All politicians do it. Darn it. I thought she would be diff’rent.
I know it doesn’t ring true. It’s factual, not emotional.
She’s a politician, “thoroughly.” And she’ll lunge to the left after being elected if history is any guide. She has the competence to match her ambition, and that is the basis of nearly all the opposition to her, not mere partisanship or sexism.
The reason I am thinking of not voting for her is my fear that she won’t lunge to the left. I don’t envy her position. It seems she has to prove she is more a man (applying male speak: to have not just ovarios, but the biggest ovarios in the land) and more than able to make manly decisions about war and bombs. And since we have spent billions on and now have the strongest military of all time, who we elect better be ready to use, yes, even preemptively.
This idea of having to appeal to all people while only having to pay back the ones who contributed more than 50,000 dollars is messy at best. One can never know who lies there behind the outfit or the suit.
Perhaps I should take some consolation from Pres. Bush who himself lunged right after his election; the “compassionate conservatism” he spoke never having materialized especially once he became a “war president.”
What do you call it when a candidate says he has Jesus in his Heart?
It’s playing the religion card.
What do you call it when a condidate talks about his Latino heritage?
It’s playing the ethnicity card.
What do you call it when a canditdate talks about his military experience?
It’s playing the hero card.
What do you call it when a candidate talks about his post 9/11 performance as mayor?
It’s playing the fake heroism card.
But when it’s gender, it’s suddenly exploitation?
Are you kidding me?
We’re talking about gender here – one of the most fundamental aspects of humanity. How can anyone expect it NOT to enter in some form into politics?
The comments on clothing seem to be more rooted in the fact that women have so many more options than men. What do hear about men? It’s when they wear a “daring” tie color. Whoopty do.
Doma, great comment.
