I don't want a fake-pleasant Hillary (despite the nature of the seeds). I want something more sinister.

As for the watering can, we don't know if "money" would be the caption. At least, not so far. *grin*

<blockquote>I for one am impressed with the stay at home Hillary, baking cookies and planting questions. </blockquote>

a) She looks too damn good in the cartoon;

b) What about a watering can? ("scripts")

kritt, I agree with your assessment. It's become harder for people who aren't media savvy and experienced news junkies to get an accurate idea of what's going on in this country and in the world. Not everyone has the desire or opportunity to read from a lot of sources, or to even know where the better sources are. And there is way too much fluff and too big a market for the fluff... not to say a break from the hard news isn't healthy now and then. ;-)

DLS- Thanks for the link

JS- Its a lot harder to see through the right and left spin put on news events, and many formerly reliable sources are less so now. I think Judith Miller's historic columns at the NYT's that led us into a war with false justification with help from Scooter Libby, have really hurt the paper's reputation. It also seems like their publishers are less willing to stick their necks out after Bush went after them last year.

"Don’t Americans want to know what’s really going on?"

I'd like to think most Americans really do want to know the truth, the substance, what matters... but it sure seems like there are all too many who become willing accomplices, fodder in effect, for the all heat no light contingent. Maybe it's always been that way, just seems like it's a lot more pervasive now.

<blockquote>Is it the journalists themselves, or the media moguls who have reduced the profession to ratings shares and profit margins? </blockquote>

The journalists and editors remain liberal and would be ever ready to dig up (when not manufacture outright) scandals about the Bush administration. Their politics may also influence which stories they cover. (In this case, too bad; it's a true scandal what appears to be going on with the vets.)

A Pew report on journalists reported the kind of gripe you mentioned, about the "corporatization" of the media. Let me find that for you ...

Here, "<a href="http://people-press.org/reports/display.php3?ReportID=214" rel="nofollow">Bottom-Line Pressures Now Hurting Coverage</a>"

also, <a href="http://people-press.org/reports/display.php3?ReportID=348" rel="nofollow">related</a>

I feel like I'm living out scenes in 1984 when tv news either brainwashes you or kills your brain cells.

Newspapers are a little better, but they are dying out, and the golden age of investigative journalism is long gone. Even the NYT's cut its investigative staff. Don't Americans want to know what's really going on? It is easier and easier to dupe us.

Joe is right about You Tube- it can make or break you- as it did George Allen after "macacca"- he had been the GOP's shining hope to fill George Bush's shoes.

If journalists were more responsible and dedicated to informing the public, we'd learn of a lot of things that would sour us on the Bush administration, and on any GOP candidate who wouldn't take the initiative to address such things. But:

"... I could not believe that my government was so mean that it would, to save a few dollars, just put our wounded “out on the street to rot” as one soldier stated.

The second issue concerning this matter is the fact that the military has been doing this for five or six years and we, the public, are just now learning about this national disgrace. I have now polled 76 people, many of whom are community leaders, as to whether or not they were aware of how we are treating our disabled veterans by not allowing them to receive benefits. Not one person of the 76 was aware of the situation.

How come we don’t know? Where were the major media on <a href="http://www.wnewsj.com/main.asp?SectionID=42&SubSectionID=201&ArticleID=160011&TM=57687.26" rel="nofollow">this subject</a>? Probably they were too busy choosing our next president for us. Or reporting Paris Hilton’s latest photo ops."

This is unfortunately how American campaigns play out, on the little things. But it does not take a rocket scientist to know that in these days of You Tube, blogs, a news media influenced by the tabloids, etc. if something like this happened there was a good chance it would come out and derail the issues discussion. Her staffers let her down by not adjusting the way they operate to early 21st century politics and info-outlets.

Amazing how the liberal "driveby media" is dwelling on every single blink in her campaign, yet failing to cover in depth the rest of the field on either side. This is what happened to Gore- the media despised him- thought he was too much the policy wonk, and picked on his clothes.

At this point I don't think it's going to happen -- not with the weak GOP field -- but wouldn't it be good for laughs if Clinton managed to do a Gore and lose an election that was all but handed to her.
