JS- Its a lot harder to see through the right and left spin put on news events, and many formerly reliable sources are less so now. I think Judith Miller’s historic columns at the NYT’s that led us into a war with false justification with help from Scooter Libby, have really hurt the paper’s reputation. It also seems like their publishers are less willing to stick their necks out after Bush went after them last year.

I’d like to think most Americans really do want to know the truth, the substance, what matters… but it sure seems like there are all too many who become willing accomplices, fodder in effect, for the all heat no light contingent. Maybe it’s always been that way, just seems like it’s a lot more pervasive now.

Is it the journalists themselves, or the media moguls who have reduced the profession to ratings shares and profit margins?

The journalists and editors remain liberal and would be ever ready to dig up (when not manufacture outright) scandals about the Bush administration. Their politics may also influence which stories they cover. (In this case, too bad; it’s a true scandal what appears to be going on with the vets.)

A Pew report on journalists reported the kind of gripe you mentioned, about the “corporatization” of the media. Let me find that for you …

I feel like I’m living out scenes in 1984 when tv news either brainwashes you or kills your brain cells.

Newspapers are a little better, but they are dying out, and the golden age of investigative journalism is long gone. Even the NYT’s cut its investigative staff. Don’t Americans want to know what’s really going on? It is easier and easier to dupe us.

Joe is right about You Tube- it can make or break you- as it did George Allen after “macacca”- he had been the GOP’s shining hope to fill George Bush’s shoes.
