George Bell, 7-foot-8 Norfolk sheriff’s deputy, has been recognized Thursday by Guinness World Records as the Tallest Man in the United States. “That makes him 2 inches taller than the NBA’s current tallest player, Yao Ming, but too short to be the world’s tallest living man.
“He stands below, according to Guinness, Ukraine’s 8-foot-5.5 Leonid Stadnyk and China’s Bao Xi Shun, who is 7 feet 8.95 inches.” More here…
Anybody who lives in or visits St. Louis should go to next-door Alton, Illinois (across the cable-stayed bridge) to visit the life-sized statue of the tallest person who ever lived, Robert Wadlow. Local residents often enjoy visits by tall people (6-8, 6-10) who look up and marvel at how tall Wadlow was.
The site where the statue is now includes a replica of the Wadlow-sized chair that had been made for him, so visitors can also sit in that chair and feel very small.
For those who appreciate the etymology: Wadlow puts the “Alt” in “Alton.”
Here are photos of the statue and the chair.
