Domajot - Thanks. I feel the same way in terms of the death of "easy voting."

Superdestroyer - What can I say, but that I hope (with all due respect) you're wrong.

Thanks for the post, Irv!

I envy you your clarity of thought.
I'm finding the political scene to be such a muddle that I resort too much to just keeping my fingers crossed when I vote.

Using my old guidelines for the presidental spot still works.to a degree. I've always voted for the person and his/her platform. Now I have to worry where the party will pull the president, however.

With all the defections frrom the R;s, the D's find themselves under such a large umbrella that it has trouble meningfully defining itself except by the 'not Rep.' concept. With so many factions within the D party, it, is being pulled in so many directions that it will have trouble moving forward. At the same time, one has to worry in which direction it will go, i.e., which faction will get the upper hand.

Voting for Congresspeople and local governemtn has become a much more serious business.
I miss the good old days, when I felt able to trust the country to remain within certain central limits and there were some' untouchable' core principles, whether the country swayed more to the left or to the right for a time.

Since I don't believe that a three (or more) party system can be efficacious, I'm watching the current scene with increased alarm.
The days of easy voting are over for me.

It does not matter who says that they are Republican leaning independents. There is not going to be a relevant political party to lean toward in the near future. The Bush Administration's imcompetence along with the Frist/Hastert miserable leadership in Congress has destroyed any credibility that anyone calling themselves a Republican could have ano any issue. It will take decades for the Republican Party to get back any level of credibility on the issues. Given the the current conservatives in the U.S. have failed to develop the next generation of leaders, there is little hope for new talent saving the Republican Party.

And even if the Republicans can get back some level of credbility on the issues, the Democrats who will be running every for the next decade or so will surely pass a new Fairness Doctrine, new hate crime legislation, new civil rights legislation, and new campagin finance laws that will eliminate most people from the political process.

In the long run, the changing demographics of the U.S. will eliminate the Republican Party because the number of black and Hispanic voters will be so large in a couple of decades that the Republicans will be unable to win a majority in almost any election.
