There is little point in trying to put parts of the Koran and its teachings into historical context. What matters most is what is the Church of Islam, the Imams and scholars, preaching to those who listen? What acts are they condemning and what passages do they cite the most. What are their views and what are they telling their followers to do? You can put their views and where they come from into a historical context, but the religon itself, the book, is just a collection of passages for whatever you want to do.

The Catholic Church 800 years ago was most definitely not a "religon of peace". Today I would argue it is, altho the book and the teachings of Jesus have not changed. The difference lies not in what the book says, but in how those who teach it to the world present it. In that context in this day and age I would proclaim that Islam is a violent religon. Maybe someday it won't be, but there is simply no way you can say its peaceful today with a straight face.
