Obama is currently getting support from both parties, but if HIllary were not the frontrunner, he would be coming under attack by the right wing, instead of her. Right now every right wing talk show host and media commentator is engaged in a stop Hillary campaign. It takes the heat off of Obama, and allows him to perpetuate a nonpartisan image.

Obama has been the media's darling, but that's not enough; Hillary Clinton is expected to win. To me what will be of interest is who she selects to be her VP. Probably not Gore or Obama, maybe Dodd (ugh), or a lightweight like Patty Murray or Maria Cantwell.

This is excruciatingly difficult.

I don't like the Bush-Clinton perperual cycle, but should Hillary be denied a chance because of her last name? It isn't as if she would be stepping out of the kitchen to go straight to the CIC's office; she's been busy in the Senate.

Obama, as a symbol of a fresh start, is very appealing. I wonder, though, how a relative newcomer would handle the most complex and difficult foreign policy challenges since WWII. On the other hand, his 'new start' image may be an actual help in turning the page internationally

I feel really sorry for the next president if it turns out to be a Democrat. The consequences of the previous years will be his/her responsibllity and it's a situation so difficult that there is no way to avoid some negative events.

Who would best carry that heavy load?
I'm not sure.

How does getting support from non dems help get him to November? If he doesn't get the nomination he's out. I can't seriously believe Clinton is going to get the nomination. I swear, ANOTHER immediate family member of a former president is just more than I can bear. If she gets it I just have to assume the system isn't just broken, its willfully so. I seriously pray for the sake of national unity that Obama pulls a rabbit out of the hat on this one.

I think Obama would work better at getting both parties on board, unlike Carter. Either way, that's what we need. No more partisanship. That's what the grassroots are calling for and that where a successful contender against the Clinton machine needs the support. If Obama wants to make it to November, he needs to start thinking outside the party. If he can garner support from independents and Unity08, and maybe the Ron Paul anti-war set, he's in business. It aint over Yogi!

I'm wondering if its possible for anyone to win in '08 without becoming part of the moneyed establishment of Washington. Obama is a test case for trying it--most of his war chest comes from small donors--but will he later become what the Clintons and Bushes are today? There's so much connectivity between Pennsylvania Avenue and Wall Street and corporate interests and the media, that principled "outsiders" are forced to become unprincipled insiders or leave politics.

Jimmy Carter came to Washington as a highly principled man of integrity who wasn't beholden to special interests. His presidency failed largely because he couldn't even get members of his own party on board with his agenda, much less the country.
