There was talk of reprimands from Chertoff and others, but Philbin, who was a participant, has been promoted to a better job.
They used to just hand out medals for doing a heck of a ob. Now they hand out promotions, as well.
This is a disturbing trend- government officials manipulating public opinion by manufacturing their own positive coverage, often with little or no repercussions for the participants. It goes into the category of paying Iraqi journalists for positive propaganda stories about the American occupation, and government produced informercials with actors posing as “happy” Iraqis who bless American liberators.
The sad thing in this case is that FEMA would have probably received positive reviews without the phony press conference.
I meant to add that another related trend in media coverage is releasing information to only friendly outlets- which the Pentagon allegedly has been engaged in recently.
Staged press conferences. This administration has absolutely no shame left.
At least someone got the boot for this little stunt, which is a first for the Bush administration. I can’t believe they finally held someone accountable for their screw-ups!
