If one believes that "signs of physical damage" are required for "torture", then the apologists for, and enablers of, torture (Yoo, Addington, Gonzales, Murdoch, O'Reilly etc.) have already won. Their little game of muddling the very definition of the word "torture" to mean "something the United States doesn't do no matter what"... wears thin in the rest of the world.

Our moral authority used to be our most important weapon-- a big leg-up before a single shot was fired. Now... we are (more and more rightly) perceived as little or no better than anyone else. "Sudan, but with aircraft carriers and ICBMs" is hardly worthy of us.,. or is it?

There's a reason that "cruel and degrading treatment" is the LEGAL definition (in treaties that our nation signed, duly ratified by the Senate, and then incorporated by American statute) as to what is expressly prohibited: it's a much harder definition to muddle.

The rest of the world doesn't see it "our" way. And until just 6 years ago, neither did we. And with damned good reason.

I have no doubt that the US managed to forget howa nation with principles could deal with detainees.
I see a problem though, in re torture. In many of hese cases allegations are just allegations. Even if every single incident were to be repoeted in the press, they would still be mostly uncorroborated claims. Should a single claim turn out to be false, which is certainly also possible, it would tend to discredit the whole narrative.
As long as suggestions are make about needed changes in laws, regular and timely access to intdependent medical personnel seems to me as important as access to legal representation. Signs of physical damage don't fade overnight!

These love affairs are bound to be short lived, because the US is rather naive in its reading of any sign of a thaw in relationships.

The minute someone puts doen the 'death to America' sign, we expect them to line up in agreement with the US on all points of roreign policy.
Merkel and Sarkozy will, naturally, consider their own national interests and public sentiment above US policies. Even if they, personally, loved the US, they could drag their countries along only so far and no further.
