Trust me. I've been following the news every waking moment. I even stayed home from work today, but my boss understood completely.

The long range doesn't look very good either. California is one of the areas that global warming will not be doing any favors for, as is the rest of the southwest of the U.S. There is less snow pack in the mountains and spring comes earlier, resulting in a longer fire season.

The most ominous comment I've heard was one pointing out that the destroyed trees, brush and grass will make ensuing floods during the rainy season inevitable.
That was a chilling look at a cycle of catastophes, not just a separate event.

Instead of waiting for fires to start and then laboring to put them out, wouldn't it be more cost-effective to prevent the fires from starting? Last week there was warm weather, low humidity, and predictions of high winds. Since this is Southern California, there was plenty of fuel around in the form of dry brush and wooden houses.

When all the above known ingredients for massive fires are assembled, why not send the firefighters out before fires have a chance to start? They could douse all areas with dangerous levels of dry brush and all areas with a previous history of fire and which have had time enough to grow more fuel.

Homeowners in dangerous areas could be instructed to water their plants and houses from garden hoses. Another preventive measure could be sprinklers on house roofs. Get a warning that conditions exist for your house to burn down, and turn on the sprinklers. Insurance companies might give a discount to homeowners with roof sprinklers.

Surely the cost in lives and homes lost and overtime pay for firefighters during horrendous fires like those we're seeing now would make prevention a wise strategy.
