Since they are not united, their future could go either way. IMO, it's always a precarious situation when religion and government are intertwined, whether in Islamic countries or the US. Everything depends, then, on the particular people in power at a given point in time and on their personal interpretation of what the religious mandates are. While we wait for the future to unfold, it's the civic code of law that will determine more immeditae effects. Another case of watch and see.
