[...] The Moderate Voice urges us to stay in Iraq for the women. By staying, we keep human contact and like the crusades before, encourage our cultures to mix and if you think our culture has good things to share … then that is good too. [...]

It occurs to me that there are parallels in the rise of feminism amomg Islamists and its rise in the USSR, in its early revolutionary days.

Women are given access to more prominent roles when they are needed to promote a political or economic goal.
Rosie the Riveter was made possible by the needs of WWII.

Nowhere is the rise of feminism a straight course of progression, however. Men are always quick to push women back in the kitchen when they are no longer needed.

Interestingly, some conservative women are now turning on feminism and blaming it for all of society's ills. Another curve in the road.

It'll be interesting to see how women do in Islam in the future.

I'm not an Arab apologist, but our own history isn't all that great. The US democracy is over 300 years old but women only started voting in 1919 and Jim Crow disenfranchised blacks untill the 60's. Arab nation are only a creation since after WWI. To expect these countries to change over night while we took a couple of centuries is interesting.
