Center of Attention

balancing_act.jpg

A round up of recent posts by various bloggers who either attempt to strike a balanced note on heated debates and controversial issues, or improve our ability to find our own sense of balance by exposing us to new information and different points-of-view.

————————–

If, like me, you were thinking hoping the Religious Right and its skewed, divisive tactics were on their way to the garbage bin of political history, think again.

With the dust settling on the Air America/Randi Rhodes uproar, Shaun Mullen and Daniel DiRito turn an old meme on its head, namely: “They’re not out to get you (at least not as much as you think), and yes, you are paranoid.”

(Relevant to nothing but my own curiousity, a question for heavy metal buffs: Wasn’t Randi or Randy Rhodes the name of the original drummer or bassist for Black Sabbath?)

Courtesy of Sen. McCain, Andrew Sullivan shares an example of how to question, with dignity and appropriate caveats, the argument of someone with whom we disagree. (If only McCain had been as delicate in his answer about Christians in the White House.)

Ed Morrissey shares a chilling look into the mind of a suicide bomber, reminding us that “balance” is, unfortunately, either not present or not understood in everyone’s vocabulary.

    Randy Rhoads played guitar for Ozzy Osbourne. Tommy Iommi was (and apparently still is) the guitarist for Sabbath.

    SS – Seems your a fan of heavy metal. I thought country was the music of choice for thje Right. :-}

    After a gander at the boocoo bucks raised by religious gurus James Dobson, Pat Robertson and Tony Perkins, I now get why McCain, Gingrich and others made pilgrimages down to the late Rev. Falwell’s Liberty University to kiss the papal ring. I guess you could qualify as a Republican kingmaker with that kind of cash lying around the house! Compare those kind of numbers with the total donations raised by the top 4 GOP candidates.

    And I thought lefties didn’t like stereotyping people, Rudi? :-)

  5. Rudi says:

    CS I would have thought of SS as a Ted Nugent/Dennis Miller Republican. ;-) Were talking music, not politics. But Ozzy isn’t a conservative family values role model.
    I doubt if he’s a fan of Nash and Crosby…

    Rudi: I just find it funny that you frequently seem to pigeonhole people or define them by who you’d associate them with. Take a stab at guessing my musical preferences if you’d like though.

    As an aside, I think anyone who chooses their entertainment based on the ‘family values’ of the entertainers is going to find the pickin’s pretty slim.

    Remember, Ozzie/Sabbath reached their heyday more than 25 years ago. I would wager that a lot of our musical tastes have migrated in those 25 years, especially those of us who were in our teens then. Ahh, but we still remember the names of the band members. Impressionable young minds and all that; not to mention older minds that still want to re-live the glory days of their youth.
