Because it takes fire away from the Democrats’ investigations of Gonzales and the Justice Dept. It also lends an air of legitemacy to Bush’s presidency because Mukasey is not a long time sycophant as so many of Bush’s former inner circle from Texas were.

Ms. Mukasey is only going to be the Attorney general for about 15 months and with the last three months being after a Democrat has been elected president.

He can start no new programs, he cannot control is own budget, and he will have no affect on personnel decision.

Why, again, is his nomination the least bit relevant?
