Certainly, my memory could be more feeble than that of an esteemed Montreal cartoonist………but, I don’t recollect that Bush ever uttered the recount word.
Great example of “journalists” trying to make up what is news………does anyone beyond a tiny, tiny microcosm of the population even care about this subject?
I think you are misinterepreting the cartoon. At its most superficial, it’s just a ‘table is turned’ moment. When things did not go Gore’s way in 2000, he demanded a recount. (Ignoring whether or not he was justified in doing so.) It is easy to imagine that, if you think of Gore and Bush still fighting things out on the political battlefield, Bush might now demand a recount now that Gore has received a great honor.
It’s silly to engage in knee-jerk defense of Gore and attack criticism of this Peace (in reality, Leftist Political) Prize, as we’ve seen here. What also would be silly is to be in any way gooey or gushy about it, just as it would have been when Jimmy Carter was given the award earlier as a deliberate political attack on Bush.
I thought that Carter was given the prize for his work in democratization with overseeing several elections in troubled or new democracies, as well as work with groups like Habitat for Humanity.
More generally, I think other debates about the award are spilling over into the cartoon. I didn’t see the cartoon as particularly political at all. It does assume that the Nobel is still an honor, however.I would agree.
Carter’s work in human rights and spreading Democracy actually achieved some results, while democratic organizations in many authoritarian countries don’t want W’s help or his money- because it usually leads to a crackdown on dissent, or the recipients are accused of being foreign agents- as in Iran.
I guess I’ve always been a fan, so I’m not getting all of the second guessing for getting the award. Its not just the movie, its the entire effort. Gore even got Bush to acknowlege that global warming was real.
Gore didn’t invent the topic of global warming; it’s been around for decades, ignoted.
Dry scientific papers just didn’t grab anyone’s attention, Gore himself has studied and tried to promote work in this area since before he was vice-presient.
The movie is just the culmination of his years of work.
Also, the movie gets the message across more effectively than a slew of scientific papers.
Those around the globe who have been trying to gat their voices heard, appreciate the important boost this gives to their efforts. .

A handful of fringy people have never grown up, gotten real, and Moved On.

In short, it made me smile.
Casual-
It’s humor and irony, not a realistc portrait.
The cartoon does capture a reality. The sour grapes crowd are piling on instead of being glad that an American won anything.

I’m still confused how he won the peace prize for a movie. Can we do a retroactive for Ghandi, Ben Kingsley’s always been tops in my book.
