Al’s Nobel: Al Gore & UN Climate Panel Win Nobel Peace Prize
BBC: Al Gore and UN climate panel are joint winners of 2007 Nobel Peace Prize.
Climate change campaigner Al Gore and the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change have been jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
Mr Gore, 59, was vice-president under Bill Clinton and has since devoted his efforts to environmental campaigning.
The UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change brings together the world’s top climate scientists.
The Nobel committee said it wanted to help the world focus on the threat it faced from climate change.

Ever since yassir arafat won the nobel peace prize, the award just can’t be taken seriously. So as far as I’m concerned rather than it being an honor, winning this “prize” should be a source of embarrassment. The whole process is politicized, whereas only causes and people dear to the international left are going to win. Carter won only because he had bashed president Bush and condemned the Iraq war.
And I say this as someone who largely agrees that global warming is for real.
The more I think about it, the more pleased I am with the Nobel prize choce.
As a result of the attention on global warming, other neglelcted issues have been resurrected from their death beds:: conservation, pollution and degredation of natural resources, and the list goes on.
Important also is the global rather than regional aspect.
A big plus is that an American is now on the international scene who does not come bearing weapons and who talks about co-operation instead of just preaching that everyone should do America’s bidding.

The Nobel committee admits being political. Well, at least they’re more honest and open about it this year. The whole thing is still a joke, though.
It seems like a backdoor way to slam Gore- the right just can proclaim that the prize – the most prestigious in the world is now——meaningless- its just political.
So by saying that you can also smear the 20 years or so Mr. Gore has been working on this issue.
Only if you neglect Inconvenient Facts, such as how blatantly political the Nobel Peace Prize and selection for awarding it have long been.
What war or hostility did he prevent or end, K.? And no, “war on the environment” and speculative future resource wars don’t count.
Ok I’ll admit, he didn’t prevent any immediate war, but he believes he is working towards preventing the future destruction of the planet. And you’ve got to admit that the wars we are engaged in now are at least partly due to control of scarce resources.
Maybe it doesn’t technically fit the category perfectly- but its still a far better choice than the year the committee picked Arafat. These days I’m just glad to see someone engaged in a good cause get rewarded for it.
And the issue is only a political one in the US- the rest of the civilized world is already on board waiting for us to wake up to reality- they’re not hiding with the covers drawn over their heads.
DLS- What issue in the US hasn’t been politicized? We live in a polarized society- thanks to your friend, GW and his best buddy Karl.
When he wins the prize for chemistry or physics, rather than for left-wing politics, I’ll respect it.
I’d rather it really, honestly be for peace, not simply a favorite good cause. And those who supported Arafat believed that his terrorism, excuse me, “freedom fighting,” was and remains a good cause.
No argument about the latter. I suspect there will be water wars in the Middle East in our future, for example.
I find him too alarmist, as are too many on this issue. There is no “crisis”; disaster is not “imminent”; we are not “cooking the planet.” There is no basis for interventionist, authoritarian, pet-lefty objectives as “solutions” to this “crisis.”
I find the celebrity aspect of this to be ridiculous.
The Peace (Leftist Politics) Prize itself is not that big a deal, given that with its politicization it has long been tainted and far removed from what it was meant to be and still ought to be.
Just wait until Hillary Clinton starts appealing to the Dem Party’s left wing and those farther left once she is back in the White House. We already saw how she was far more polarizing in the early 1990s than Bush ever has been.

DLS- Even Hillary’s most ardent opponents admit she has not been polarizing in the Senate. Those who have worked with her have praised her work ethic, competence and attention to detail. The right will undoubtedly try to smear her by bringing forth the image that they promoted in the 90′s, but the more she campaigns, the more voters find out that’s not a realistic picture anymore- if it ever was.

Look at the GOP candidates (except Ron Paul) and Republicans like Bush, Cheney and Reagan, and tell me if you think anyone would nominate them for negotiating a peaceful end to a conflict.
K, that doesn’t make Gore any more deserving of the prize. Not for the nominal purpose of the prize, at least; now if we consider the modern-day alternative purpose for which the prize has been awarded, certainly Gore is more deserving. (Bush, Cheney vs. Gore? No contest. Reagan vs. US-western-disarmament advocates IPPNW back in the eighties during the “freeze” movement? No contest.)
Hollywood likes Gore more, too. (And the UN?)
Well as far as the Peace prize goes, its by definition a political award. War is carried on largely by gov’ts, and those who are involved in the cessation of wars are always political in nature. I can’t help but feel there could have been a more appropriate recipient for it though. Like, someone whose actually tried really hard to stop a war or in fact done so.
